Been looking to upgrade my PC, but unfortunately, I don't have the cash to splash on a mega computer, so this is just a 'one step up' kinda deal.

I know this isn't a mega mega ultra flying super computer that you guys can build (maybe one day, *sigh*), and it's using older parts instead of the newer standards, but it's definitely a step up from what I've got now (756 DDR, 2000+ CPU, FX5200, ASUS A7N8X-X mobo).

So basically, I was wondering --

a) Is it worth the small outlay for these components? Would it make THAT much difference?

b) Is there anything better for similar price?

c) Are these components fine to work with each other?

Thanks a bunch guys, you're awesome

The above spec is good but if you can't afford it then this spec is much better than the original.

If you look around you can find a X2 3600+ Energy Efficient cpu for £44 which brings it the total to £148 inc delivery.

The motherboard has built in graphics.

This looks good. I can get a couple of those components for a little cheaper elsewhere (that wont get me shouted at, right? :)), so that should knock the price down a tad. I can save up a little longer, too.

Good suggestions so far, thanks

What are you going to use the PC for? It's going to struggle with modern games but will be fine for general browsing. There again your existing PC will probably be fine for this. Semi-pro Waster's spec looks much, much better and will take a decent graphics upgrade in the future. Either way, you won't need that extra cooling fan with what you've listed yourself as you get one with the retail CPU. Unless you're planning on overclocking of course.

I don't play many modern games, not the computer chugging ones anyway. I mostly browse, as well as image editing (photoshop) and video editing (premiere pro), but it would be nice to have the option to upgrade in the future with minimum fuss.

'Course, problem with semi-pro's spec is that I'd also need to buy a SATA HD and a PCI-E graphics card, which all adds onto the price.

Right now I have something like this --

Asrock Conroe945G-DVI (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
£45.83

Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60GHz (800FSB)
£58.74

Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-5400C4 TwinX (2x512MB)
£27.01

Maxtor STM3250820AS 250GB 7200RPM SATAII 8MB Cache – OEM
£39.94

£175 ish

+ Graphics?

I have a good enough case and PSU I can use, plus you're right, the processor will come with a cooling fan.

Except you don't have to buy them because the motherboard has IDE connectors and onboard graphics.
