Super Stardust HD (PS3) - OC Leaderboard Challenge

It does seem to get easier with each play.

I always feel confident I'll improve my previous score each time I have a go, although that shouldn't be hard given that my current high score is somehwere in the region of 7m. :o

Some vague tips to help.

1) Every bomb you have left at the end of the round adds to your multiplied score at the end of each round.
The calculation is

TimeLeft x (2000 + (100 x no. of bombs)) x Multiplier

So on the first level you have 3 bombs to start with so if you don'use them the 2000 above will become 2300 etc.

On each planet (made of 5 waves) you get 2 bombs on each of wave 2, 3 & 4.

2) Boosting (L2) though the Points objects gives more points then flying though them. by default these give you 2500 x Multiplier.

So if you have a multiplier of x3 then they are worth 7500 each. BUT if you boost through them they are multiplied even more. If I boost through the same Points bonus I will get 2x7500. If I boost though 2 (I line them up then boost) I will get 2x7500 for 1st one, 3x7500 for next one. If I boosted through 11 (which is possible after you break the big Green bonus blocks) I would get (2x7500)+(3x7500)+....+(11x7500).

So even if you just have a single Bonus point item, boost through it to get double points.

3) I never continue beyond the 1st wave of Planet 1 (LAVE) unless I get at least 6 weapons upgrades.

4) Weapons upgrade order should always be Rock Crusher, then Gold Melter, then Ice Splitter.

I can't think of anything else. A video would help much better but I do not have facilities to do this. I am very fast at killing the bosses, if anyone wants hints on them post here.

Thanks RP.

Despite playing it many times in the past, I never noticed these things.
Well, 1 and 2 anyway. The rest are a matter of preference I guess. I never noticed the boosting through points to give more points though!

V1N.

EDIT: Anyway, I finally got Ninja Gaiden today, so shall be trying to get through that for now.

Impressive, I'm still only around the 7 million mark. :o

Level 1: Use the red beam and upgrade that one only (at 100% start on blue stuff)
Level 2: Use the red beam and upgrade blue stuff (at 100% start on green stuff)
Level 3: Use the blue beam and upgrade green to full

Also I never use bombs, I use the boost to get out of trouble.

TBH once you get in the swing it's easy to get that high, before my 32mil game my highest was 10.5mil and had I not been tired playing at 1AM I could easily have got 40-45k assuming the levels didn't make a very sharp increase in difficulty.

I used to this method, but then I changed to doing, Green, then Red, then Blue. Green on Level 1 makes the asteroids/rocks disperse very quickly. I only user this method as it means each level is cleared quicker, hence larger bonus calculation at the end. I can usually get 100% green weapon and about 50% red weapon by the end of the 1st planet.

By the way (for those who do not know) once you complete all 5 planets, the whole thin starts again in hard mode. Your weapons upgrades are reset but you retain the multiplier and bombs/lives etc. This is Hard mode, the rocks and items move faster.

How do you get that many upgrades? Do you always go for the green rocks rather than completion speed?

Well on planet 1 phase 1, you can easily get 5 upgrades Which takes your weapon of choice to 38%. On the other phases the upgrades are more random. I noticed on phase 2 when you get the green bonus rock, you should always blast these open with green weapon so it breaks in one go. I let it stay there for a few secs and then blast it, and I get another 3-4 upgrades. Which takes me close to 70% weapons after just 2 phases.

I always go for upgrades over time on the earlier levels as you don't get many points (your multiplier is quite low) at the end of each level. But for instance, in planet 2 phase 2 there is loads of the gold rocks (which you should use red weapon to get rid off) but then halfway through the levels you get the other rocks (that need green weapon) and you get the little ice pellets. Both of these need the green weapon to kill them quickly. So this is why I get green upgrades as a priority.

Realistically, you can easily get 30 mill + just by completing the first 3 planets without loss of life (At this point you would have a few bombs which also add to your multiplier).

At some point if I can be bothered I was thinking of somehow videoing a run through of a couple of planets as an example and hosting them somewhere. But I only have a camera phone and the video recording on their is crap. I just searched Youtube and realised ppl have already done this!!!

The advice will keep flowing, until you beat my score :p

I'll get bored of the game long before I hit 60mil.

I really appreciate the tips though mate :)

I will give up when I can reach Elite level (3rd run through of the game in a row I think). I saw a youtube vid and it looks crazy!!!

(couple of tips in the comments section as well)

Edit: When do you normally lose your 1st life? I normally don;t lose it till 3rd planet, but around then you start to get 1 million end of level bonuses. On the 2nd run through (as long as you have all the bombs saved and a multiplier of say 7x-8x) you can get over 8 million per level, which suddenly makes the scores not look that impressive.

About the end of the third planet but once I lose one I lose them all pretty damn fast!

For some reason I sometimes cannot find out how to progress in a level and end up losing all of my time bonus though. Any tips for that, like I have no idea what triggers the enemies to spawn at the end of the levels?

Normally for the next "wave" to appear, you need to kill a certain percentage of the previous wave. Sometimes you may be short say only 1% so this means you just need to kill 1 more asteroid/rock from previous wave.

A good example to test this is Planet 1 Phase 1.

1st you get 1 big rock, then 3 smallish rocks appear, then 1 more big one. To end the level you need to have killed all the large portions of rock. Until you do this it won't trigger the little red things, which end the level. Killing the remaining small blocks won't help much, you need to zoom around the planet and find the big chunks etc. As soon as you blow the last big chunk into small pieces, the red things will appear.

Every now and then if I can't find the trigger (rare) I quickly turbo to other half of the planet and release a bomb. (you would still get a larger bonus, even though you lost a bomb, you increased your level completion time.

Reading this though, it sounds like I have studied this game!! I haven't, i just picked up on all the small things from my 100+ plays of this!!!

I really want to hit the top 200 for this, although that will be a mean feat (I think 200 millish). I also played the Planets mode and got top 200 scores in the 1st four planets. More than anything this helped me realise which waves come when and best strategies on killing types on enemies.

Incidentally, what do you do on the Planet 2 boss, when he closes his tentacles and fires missiles at you, do you kill his missiles and wait for him to open his arms and shoot him some more? You can actually go inside his enclosed tentacles and shoot him and all the missiles can;t get you as you are inside his tentacles (easily shaves 30 secs off that level).

I really wanted to like SuperStardust HD, but i was such a fan of the original on the Amiga that i prefer the original in almost every way.

Its a shame they didn't include a retro mode :(

*bump*

I finally updated the scores :) If anyone fancies being added to the scoreboard just add me in your psn and I'll get round to updating them.

Expect some changes in leaderboard position over the Christmas holidays, 100+ million is my next target ... mwhahahaha ;) :p

Put the planet scores up as well, just so I don't have to keep logging in to the game to see you batter my score ;)
