Surely this is a strange move?

There's a big manual transmission = performance car perception in the US from what I gather, and thus they need to keep it.

Although it's more likely to do with emissions. Autos get it much easier on the tests in the eu.
 
I'd imagine that there's enough demand for the manual in the US to offer it and not enough demand in the EU to offer it. Yes there will be people who want it, but they either will never drive/own one or they'll just accept the DSG. :p
