My Girlfriends' Dad has just bought an LCD TV as their old crt had died on them.

When he was in the shop he was told that you NEED a surge protector with them cos a spike on the mains can kill them.

He didn't get one cos it sounded rather like the shop was trying to flog him something he didn't need.

I realise that tv's and computers etc should really be plugged into a surge protector but is it really the cse that you MUT have one with an LCD TV, to me it sounds like nonesense

Any thoughts???

You certainly don't NEED one. If you live in a built up area in a major town, the chances are you will never need the protection they provide either.

However, for no more than £20 it is worth getting one just to be on the safe side. :)

Or you could buy a UPS when the power goes off you can continue watching! Mines plugged into a UPS although it's a bit posh, most LCD/DLP projector owners in the now have a UPS.
You don't need a surge protector but it's probably recommended.

It definatley sounds like the sales person was trying to add on all the essentials to increase the overall value of the sale and achieve his/her targets. I've never heard of the need for one's on TV but as has already been said it certaintly wont hurt to get a cheaper one to connect it to.
