ok daft question... do i need one of these massive (and expensive) amp or a/v receiver units to output to surround sound speakers?

i have:

• Sony 40W5500
• PS3
• Sky+ HD

and would like a really discreet surround sound setup, not wanting anything overly amazing, but would like it to be better than the TV's built in speakers...

can the tv not output to speakers? the reason I ask is because my in-laws plugged a 30 quid logitech set of pc speakers (2.1) into their small conservatory telly and it sounded (to my ears) pretty good, at least compared to how it was before...

is there nothing with the amp built into the sub or something simple like this?

My parents had rather old CRT Toshiba 32incher telly could something along those lines, it had the outputs for 5.1 sound if i remember correctly, or at lest 5.0 anyway..

i haven't heard of any modern telly's that do that iam afraid, i guess you could try say, a set of gamers speakers? for example the z-5500s (and output via optical), that has most of the bits and bobs in the sub? - i wouldn't like to say how nice it would sound though.. most likely very tinny...

just get a basic home cinema, no?

5.1 setup, sony, panasonic, samsung etc etc etc, will be dvd or blu-ray, most will play your other items i'm sure.

Really, your choices either :

A 2.1 / stereo PC speaker / amplifier setup - 3.5mm jack from the speaker setup to headphone/3.5mm/RCA output of TV

A reasonable 5.1 setup from Yamaha, Sony etc for around £200.

Yep, check out the Sony HT-IS100.
similar to the onkyo above but much better looking.
that's the one! that's what I've gotta get!

will integrate nicely with my PS3 and Bravia Telly... sony all round :)

almost a shame my Sky+ HD box is Samsung :p
