I appreciate this question might have been asked before. Sorry if it has but I can't find the thread !!!

I think I can do this but wanted to be sure, and how do I actually do this?

I have a Prescott P4 3.2Ghz on a 478/2gig machine running XP at the moment and have got a copy of Vista Ultimate. I'd like to check this out on this machine . However, I am going to build a new C2D in a about six weeks (with my bonus !!!) and will want to swap my license upon completing this machine (I'll reinstall XP on the P4 box as it does now).

I am not bothered about losing settings from the first Vista install on the P4 box - I just want to play!! All my data is backup up.

Anyone confirm this is possible? How do I then move the license from my old to my new machine? I do I tell Microsft that the Vista copy is removed from the old P4 machine.

Is it an OEM copy or retail?

If its OEM don't ring and tell them your swapping it to a new PC as this will break the EULA.

Also you aren't looking hard enough, this has been discussed on about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 threads (thats how it feels).

they shouldn make OEM available like they have done. it just causes too many problems for system builders and to be honest it just seems pointless. you either buy a complete system with it already installed, or you build your own. peopel who buy a system arent going to need to buy another OEM copy, and peopel who build will want a copy that they can trasfer to a different setup when they upgrade....

what exactly is the point of it?

Microsoft have never really made OEM versions specifically available themselves. They sell them to system builders. Some people buy extra copies and sell them on to consumers for a profit but still massively below the retail price. Microsoft have, I'm sure, considered making further restrictions on their sale (after all, the packaging says "Only for sale with a new PC") - but have decided that it's not feasible or legally possible to stop people from selling OEM copies. It's a gap in the market being filled. Microsoft don't distribute OEM copies to retailers with retail copies, it's a completely seperate supply chain. (Or so I'm led to believe)

Lots of people would be annoyed if they suddenly had to pay £200+ for Windows when system builders still get it for £50. (or whatever, I don't know anything about the actual pricing)

install it without entering in your code and extend the activation using the usual legal methods.. check out google.

i would recommend creating an image of your current xp setup, that way you can just re image it to its current state when youve played enough

You get MS support with the retail, the OEM has to provide support for the OEM copy.

That is potentially a lot of support time if its needed by either supplier.
