swapping sims on a three mobile contract?

quick question...

Is it possible to put my 3mobile simcard into a new sim-free unlocked phone or do I have to upgrade using their service and their phones?

The reason why i ask is that i have an 18 month contract and wish to buy a cheap, no-frills nokia from an auction site and get the benefit of long battery life and a smaller phone without cancelling my contract.

Nope 3 won't like you using a non-3 handset on their network. They WILL catch up with you and threaten to terminate your contract if you don't start using the proper phone pronto.

However, that is only if you are using a non-3G phone.

If you are able to buy a 3G handset, then you are fine - its just like all the other networks.
