Synology Disk Station - Connect Lost Since...

Evening All,

I setup my DS218J about 3 or 4 years ago, I recently upgraded my Mac and am now receiving regular 'connection lost' emails in relation to the DDNS service hosted by Synology about 30 minutes after disconnecting from LAN. This causes my CCTV/Surveillance Centre to stop recording events which is somewhat frustrating.

When my Mac is docked and reconnected to LAN i receive a 'connection resumed' email within a few minutes, which leads me to believe this is likely static IP or config related. There are no issues with any of Synology's services.

I'm not also unable to load the login page (over wifi) for the DNS login I'd use remotely when not on LAN or away from home.

I have configured my TCP/IP settings for my wifi network with a manual IPv4 address via Mac System Settings and also in the DHCP/Lease settings on my router.

Networking isn't really my forte but if anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful.

Thanks,

BennyC

Does your static IP overlap with your DHCP scope?

It's in range (if that's what you mean). I've set it on my Router as an example 200 to 250, and it's say .1.230.

My NAS is wired directly in to a switch, my Macbook is also wired directly in to the same switch.

It seems that unless my Mac is wired in to the switch my NAS can't connect to the DNS service?

Don’t set a static IP within your DHCP range

Thanks, I've adjusted this.

The NAS IP has always been outside of this range, my old Mac was within this range weirdly without issue. Waiting to see if I get another connection lost email :o:rolleyes:

Edit: still no joy.

Check both addresses of the Mac, it'll have a wired IP and a wireless IP. Ensure that both are not set within the DHCP range and renew any DHCP leases on them.

Changing the DHCP scope on your router won't automatically give a new address to any clients, by default they will wait until half way through their lease to negotiate a new address. Some clients *ahem Windows* sometimes even keep hold of the address until it's flushed from it.

Thank you, this seems to have done the trick now. *Touch wood* it's been about an hour and usually within a few minutes I can't access the NAS when on WiFi and the dreaded connection lost email usually follows within about 15 minutes.

Thanks again :)

No worries, glad it’s sorted.

This was semi-short lived :p

Fine all week then today when leaving for the weekend I closed my Mac, as I have done many times this week without issue and received the DNS connection lost message again. As soon as I reopened/docked it to LAN a reconnected e-mail appeared.

What could this be pointing to? I'll look at the Synology unit itself/DSM for settings but I'm still at a loss. I set it all up so long ago part of me is considering just performing a factory reset and starting again...

edit: so checked the error log remotely. Seems to be an external IP issue.

I think this may have originally been the DHCP lease issue and then having changed my DNS to 8.8.8.8 during trouble shooting. I've removed this/set to router default and *touch wood* seems to be behaving again now.

I did get the same external IP error on Monday having connected to LAN from WiFi, this was prior to the adjustment above though.

Hopefully this helps someone else at some point.
