I have the following :-

Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard
AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail
Corsair Vengeance C70 Midi Tower Gaming Case - Military Green
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750M High Performance 750W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020040-UK)
Corsair Hydro H80i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
Patriot Viper 3 "Venom Red" 4GB DDR3 PC3-14900C9 1866MHz Single Module (P34G189UR)
MSI HD 7970
Maxtor 1TB SATA HD

This system has been running fine without any issues for 11 months and it has just started freezing up and slowing down when this happens the HDD Light seems to come on and stay on while this is happening.

I have Windows 7 64 bit installed.
system temps all seem fine
fans are all running fine and normal

so if someone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Hard drive thrashing could be a number of things from a dying hard drive to malware / virus infection. The first thing I'd do is back up then do a full virus scan / Malwarebytes scan.

Do you have another hard disk you can use to test / borrow an older one from someone, and slap it in and do a clean install?

If a different HDD gives you the same problems then the fault will be somewhere else, but I'd highly recommend doing the Malwarebytes scan first.

Thanks for the reply's guys, I did a full wipe and install and still had the same issues so took the opportunity to replace the drive with a new 2TB ( for storage ) & a 256GB M550 SSD ... its so much quicker now :)
