Ok before i proceed, can i make it clear that this aint an anti-fatty thread at all. :)

Ive got loads of things to say but i dont know how to present it but hopefuly by the end you will see the picture im trying to paint.

Right, why do we as a society immediately or tend to think anyone fat is lazy and uhealthy? Is this because of the part of the world we live in or what the media is pumping into our heads by dictating to us being skinny is cool, e.g page 3 girls...... Anyway, im from the part of the world where being fat is not an issue at all, infact the bigger the woman, the better! Having said that i dont fall into that category, i love my size 8-10 women.

The news today featured this
Very obese women should be denied fertility treatment, experts say. The British Fertility Society is recommending women with a body mass index of 36 and over should not be allowed access to fertility treatment.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5296200.stm

I personally think this is wrong, everyone should have access to equal treatment regardless of whether obese, fat or skinny. My opninion off course.

We can argue that it is a measure of trying to limit the drain on NHS etc but how can we acheive this when our lifestyle is full of junk, fat, high carb diet, liquor- basically unhealthy food when compared to other non-westernised diets. What im trying to say is are we as a society just looking for a short term solution by blaming the fat ones or are they really to be blamed? Let's not forget that everyone that is fat or obese is as a result of unhealthy life style.....it could also be genetic and other factors too.

Lately, there seem to be a trend that would appear to be edging towards discrimination against fat people - there has been suggestion of all sort of tax e.g Tax for occupying more than one seat on a plane, tax for "draining" on the NHS etc. Is this right at all? Tony Blair was on tv the other saying something about how fat people should do more and take care of themselves or something along that line..I dont know but if im a fat guy (im not by the way) i wont want the prime minster to tell me how to live my life simply because im fat...Not only is he not qualify to do so but am quite sure he would have been voted for by quite a few of them.

Anyway, what do you guys think...are we starting (if not already) discriminating against fat people?

I dont know the exact figures but i would guess that about 90% of people who are fat are that way because of there bad lifestyle, not any other reason. For these people i have no sympathy. Its the other 10% that get it bad.

Personally I think the fertillity thing is a good move, it just increases the risk for both the child and parent, but on a side note, I personally feel that if the person cant look after themselves properly then how are they going to cope with a child? I feel that they should have to proove that they can make the effort by loosing weight, but of course there are always going to be exceptions.

Now everyone and their pet rock is going to have a go at me for that comment, so im going to go back to work and find that good ol flame proof suit that I keep at home under the squeeky floorboards.

discrimination against fat people is as old as the hills...it just appears to be becoming "official".

although the generalisation of fat=unhealthy is often true, it isnt always...i suspect my recovery rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, peak flow etc is far better than a "thin" person who smokes, eats nothing but fried food like chips, does sod all exercise, drinks excessively and so on...

whilst i agree that ivf should be available to either all or none at all, i do believe that if you are unhealthy due to obesity, then you should make the effort to lose weight or at least improve your health. on the same front i think you should have to give up smoking if you want ivf...

if taxes and so on are to be reviewed, then UNHEALTHY people should be penalised, not just fat people....however i think that this is heading towards the removal of personal freedom by the state, and would be extremely concerned if this ever happened...

lol... jeez what is it with this lark about dscrimination... boohoo everyone is being discriminated against.. micks, blacks, queers, cripples, muslims and now fatties ...

you make it sound like its so bad that we're 1 step away from rounding them up, throwing them into concentration camps and oven baking them hitler style..

My views from another thread:

People who are fat have no one but themselves to blame, I am tolerant of the lifestyles of others, but the fact is most of the people who are fat are fat because they have a poor diet, eat too much and do no excercise - simple as. Those fat ******* you get who complain about being fat or use the excuse of a slow metabolism, the same people who can be found in McDonalds every lunch time stuffing there face make me ROFL. I mean, when someone is punishing their insides by eating so much, their metabolisms I'm sure are extremely fast - it has to be to cope with such a large food intake.

They are trying to say that calling someone fat should be socially unnacceptable like racism. It's like - Love, if you weren't fat you wouldn't get called it, it's what you are and if you don't like it lose some weight and get a grip - You have more rolls than Greggs. What's socially unnaceptable is the amount of space you take up on a bus, the nasty breath and horrifying body odour fat people emit.

The fact that Britain is getting fatter speaks volumes about the state of our society.

And to reiterate, fat IS bad.

If it's appropriate for most people to discriminate against 'fat' people for being unhealthy, is it appropriate for fit people to discriminate against most people for not being as fit as they are?

Given that the first step to such barbaric practices is the dehumanisation of your proposed victims via the use of aggressive slang terms, you might actually be onto something there......

since when were page 3 girls skinny?

they are mostly quite curvy in all the right places which looks healthy.

Ive seen page three girls who are in my eyes skinnny...and yes some of them have curves in the right places. What im trying to say there is the perception the media is kinda brain-washing us with that "hey look this is what is acceptable"...

I dont think discrimination against the big ones is right. Anyone going to gym can say what they want but i dont see it as offensive like calling some one a fatty...

Not sure what you re trying to conjur up...

Nout to do with the media, fat IS bad, across all cultures globally it is considered unattractive, it is very unhealthy which is a turn off aside from the fact fat people often sweat a lot more than a healthy person, often have BO, **** breath due to more often than not fat peoples poor diet, it also says a lot about a person, fat people usually have very poor self esteem and undoubtedly live a very inactive lifestyle (lazy if you will)

I see what you are saying but i do disagree with some of it.

Not all fat people stink or ooze body odour

They might eat MCD but it aint that one meal that makes them fat.

Sure the might take more than one seat on the bus but could this be because we as a society aint catering for their needs? Im mean making the seatts bigger so as to accomomdate them and not based the seat of an average person - not everyone is an average person...

Dont forget as well, because of our lifestyle, we are getting bigger as standard. A size 10 of the 1960s is more or less a size 8 of now. IIRC ladies are gettting bigger every decade by an inch or so overall.

I didn't have to wait long for a fresh example of you using sarcasm to paint other posters as racist...

Yet again, i disagree with some of your post content. Not every places in the world thinks fat is ugly. Nigeria is a good example. Hawai (sp?) is another country of fatties that dont care about their body mass.

Being fat dont automatically equates to a bad diet or poor lifestyle.

El Razur it completely depends in what context it is being said. If someone were to walk up to a fat person and say HAHAHA YOUR FAT, LOSE SOME WEIGHT then that is not right, it is malicious and insult is intended. If I was a worker in a shop though and some fatty comes over and says can I try on that dress and I were to say no, you're too fat, that is not offensive, it is telling her she cannot fit because she is too fat. Or if someone asked me for their opinion like, do you think I'm fat? if they were I would honestly tell them yes you are way too fat, it's unhealthy you need to lose weight etc.
