T.V licence

If he has a TV with a means of recieving channels in any way, be it from an aerial, freeview box or sky etc, then he will have to pay for a license. Doesnt matter if he doesnt watch it, if its connected you have to pay. Remove means of receiving the channels (bin the aerial) though and you dont

Silence, fool, you know not what you speak of.

Sorry how?

I have a TV connected up to receive channels and im watching BBC1, the TV licence man calls to the door, i turn the TV off and answer the door, he comes in and sees my TV is connected up to receive channels, i say "I dont watch it" and he says "Ok then, no licence needed"

You can quite legally have stuff like sky boxes connected to receive radio channels, if you search the tv license website hard enough you will find the info.

This is not true. You only need a license if you are watching programs as they are being broadcast. You do not need a license for simply owning a TV and having it plugged in. If you then switch it on and watch something live then you do.

Indeed. It always gets said in these type of threads though.

Problem is however that people have been routinely prosecuted under those exact circumstances. It is assumed that ownership of the equipment supposes you use it or have used it without the relevant licence.

I know this because I was fined £135 in 1989 for exactly that, it was a shared house and not even my TV.

Thats what im saying though, if it is connected to receive TV channels then you need a license, if you just use it with a dvd player or xbox or whatever you dont.

it is connected and you could receive tv channels, but you don't need a license.
It use to be much clearer but here it is, it use to talk specifically about radio channels.

Sky+, games consoles and digital TV recorders

If you use Sky+, Playstation or any other games console or a digital TV recorder to watch or record programmes as they're being shown on TV, you need to be covered by a TV Licence. This is also the case if you use a DVD/VHS recorder.

If you only use your digital box to produce sounds (i.e. you don't use it to display programmes), then you don't need a TV Licence.

If he don't have an aerial plugged in and I would think he don't as he says he never watches TV on his TV just the net when he wants to etc and he don't have SKY or Virgin and not even a digi box so he really don't need one im sure he would be ok.

Not just that if you don't have an aerial plugged in and really never do watch TV (like me mate) and they say you are talking rubbish surely that's wrong false accusations etc etc.

My mate said

"besides I don't like organizing my life around F`ing tv"

Hahahaha.

No you don't. You only need a tv licence to watch live tv broadcasts. Any equipment you may have is completely irrelevant.

Thats the bit that threw me, i didnt know you could disable the tv channels and only have radio, i assumed that a sky box would just become a freeview box and you would still need a license.

So....

Own a TV - No license
Own a TV connected to a Sky or Freeview box that can only receive Radio broadcasts - No license
Own a TV connected to a Sky or Freeview box that receives live televisual broadcasts - License needed.

So if i take my original post and add in the word TV at a certain point, would that statement be correct?

Really? As TVLicensing won't disclose the Prosecution figures, how can you say there are 'Routine Prosecutions'? Or indeed ANY Prosecutions at all?

Carry on reading.......

If you don't know exactly what your rights are, you can find yourself fined regardless of the actual need of a licence or not. This was especially true before the advent of the internet.
