Next week im off to Lanzarote. I'd like to take a ball with me, am I ok just taking it as hand luggage, or will I have to deflate it and put it in my suitcase? If I pack it without deflating it, will it explode or do anything weird during the flight?

While I'm here I'll just have another dig at the NHS... I applied for my EHCI card over 2 weeks ago and its still not here, even though they said it would arrive within 7 working days. I rung them on Thursday and Friday. It better get here before wednesday or I will not be pleased... not that they will care anyway

spare the flight crew the inconvenience and spend a couple of Euros on a ball in Lanzarote, i mean it's a tourist resort with nice blue seas and warm sandy beaches, it won't be too difficult to find an inflatable ball

Haha, I work on the EHIC team here in Newcastle. I have the ability to check to see if you are registered on the system. If you have applied for an EHIC card 2 or more times, it can be held up by our checking process. We have to manually go through each and every duplicate application to see if cards need to be reissued. If you don't already have a card yourself, but you have listed a partner or child on the application form who does already have a card, this holds things up too.

Anyway, as long as you are on the system, you are covered. You don't actually need to have an EHIC card with you (although this makes things easier). All you need is an emergency telephone number (which I don't know off the top of my head) and your National Insurance or NHS number.

Don't forget, the PPA are processing many MILLIONS of EHIC application forms. A few are bound to go astray ;)

Best to deflate it and put it in your suitcase. You are only allowed to carry one piece of hand luggage onto the plane, and there are size restrictions, so if you are going to have an inflated ball in a bag then you won't be able to carry much else on the plane.

Also if it's La Santa you're going to in Lanzarote you'll be able to rent balls of any type, bikes, rackets, surf boards and any other equipment you might want.

If that's not the one, then you should go there just 'cos its so awesome.
