If they've just spent 3 years training you and you've got another year's experience on top of that then they might well be inclined to let you take a year off rather than risk you quitting, going traveling and then joining a competitor when you return.

Very true, now however it seems they are keen for me to do another 1 years home study to bring the qualification I get at the end of the apprenticeship up to a full Hons degree. Certainly adds something else into the mix!
