So, I had a blood-test earlier and now it's got me wondering.

When you're having blood taken, do you like to watch or find it more comfortable to look away?

Personally, I have to look away or I go really light-headed. I did try and watch once a few years ago but on the walk home from the GP, I nearly passed out when I stupidly recalled seeing the blood splurt out. Probably doesn't help that I had a weird thing about needles growing-up. :p

I don't mind looking usually. I've never had a problem with needles... But I had some surgery a couple years ago where the surgeon was cutting me open with a scalpel. Obviously I had an anaesthetic but it was local. And at one point a load of blood started gushing out and he was just mopping it up like it was water. THAT made me open my eyes a bit lol. Plus I wasn't a fan of them using a soldering iron (or something similar) to cauterise the wound :/

Only time I've had blood taken was for an sti test which uses a smaller needle than if you are donating. I looked away when she put it in but watched it fill up the capsules. Don't mind it too much tbh.

I'll be donating for the first time next week. If possible, I fully intend to watch the whole thing. Never been squeamish about blood, whether my own or that of others.

ever since I got really ill in 08 and had lots of blood taken and on a iv drip for 5 days my needle phobia has been reduced. Aswell as now having diabetes. I actually had blood taken just a few weeks ago and not only watched but it didnt even make me nervous.

I *think* im cured. Now for the real test and to go and try donate some of my rare blood the gits keep wanting :D

I have a history and issues with needles, so I look away.

Much better now than I used to be but they still get my heart going. :(

I tend to look away, then if it's a pretty nurse* doing the blood taking, sort of go white and limp :P
It's not so much that I can't look at the blood, it's just I don't like needles much in general..

*That's a lie, it seems to happen about half the time regardless :p (low blood pressure or something like that i think).

... now having diabetes.

Now for the real test and to go and try donate some of my rare blood the gits keep wanting :D

If your diabetic they dont want anything donated from you, and that includeds organs after your dead.

I know they dont want my sugary blood for anything, even as an ice cream topping.

Needles dont bother me, i dont stare at them when they are taking blood though because i find it makes the nurses nervous and they tend to **** up more and miss your veins if your looking at them.

Or maybe its cause i only look at the young cute ones....not the 50 year old "can find a vien in the dark with a dart" ones.

I don't watch them going in, but once they're there I'm happy to look, I tihnk the vacuum blood pots are an interesting design, and there's something intriguing about that first squirt of blood that rockets to the end of the pot due to the vacuum lol

Immunisations into the shoulder etc I'm fine with, just blood test needles into veins that I generally avoid watching

I find it fascinating and love to watch, doesn't phase me in the slightest unless I'm caught looking. Of course if it's a male nurse then I don't look down his top and just look at the little ***** going in.

i've had it done like 6 years ago.. need to see a doctor sometime.. haven't been for a check up for years..

Blood tests and anything to do with veins is my one weakness. Always feel feint - starting when the nurses are thumbing around my elbow for a vein. Once they wouldn't let me lie down afterwards and made me go and sit in reception - I feinted, awful - thought I was going to die.

In fact, just reading this thread is starting to make me feel a bit light headed - so I won't be reading it again.
