Hi chaps,

I've got the MOT today but unfortunately the tax disc expires at the end of the day, so need a mad rush to get my tax done.

If I pop up the Post Office and apply for tax, am I covered until I get the disc through the post? ie: do the coppers check against a database rather than just looking at your disc?

Othwerwise I guess it's a matter of keeping the car off the road until I get the disc?

Advice appreciated :D

The ANPR goes by a database. I drove round for a couple of weeks on an expired tax disk whilst waiting for the new one in the post, didn't get stopped.

I'm sure this comes up at the end of EVERY month.

Even if you've bought a tax disc you can still be done for "Not displaying a valid tax disc" which is an £80 fine. It's up to the copper whether he does you or not but at the end of the day it's fully entitled to.

Responce to the above. Obviously cameras and coppers doing random reg checks will see that you have paid for your tax disc but say you're parked up or pulled over they can still fine you for the above reasons.

Err, at the Post Office don't they just give you the disc there and then? I've just bought mine now from the Post Office. Odd place, don't go there often!

Hrm, no worries. I'll leave it off the road until I get the disc... should be a few days and I'm at work anyway :)

First time I've had to do this so I'm not sure if the PO just give it to you? Hehe

Post office do just give you the disc. Because of your question I kind of assumed you'd done it online. Nevermind.

No worries - thanks guys - me being a noob, this seemed the place to ask :)

Although the DVLA database is normally a little slow, they have records on when your disk if it is out of date, so if you are ANPRd by a panda car you're screwed.

I saw an old BMW parked up on the side of the road today with a big yellow sticker on the windscreen saying "Non-Taxed Road Vehicle" or something similar, and it was also clamped!

Didn't know they did that!! Assumed it was just a fine...

If people are obviously using it they police will clamp etc. There used to be a person that would park out the back of where I used to work which was fo the shops only, he had no tax etc. and when we told the police all they said was 'Well he's parked on private property so there is nothing we can do.', they wouldn't even come back to check if it was moved or not (which would have instantly meant it had been on a road. His tax ran out about 3 years prior to this even.
