I've only just realised my car tax expires today! No post office open tomorrow so I am going to go on Monday morning and get it pronto!

Think there will be any problems? :(

nope, you will be ok aslong as you dont drive your car untill its taxed?, i think you can tax your car online now?

Yep, you can tax it online, but that will mean I can't drive it until I get the disc (failure to display tax disc) which will be about 5 working days. Going the post office means I will be untaxed for 1 day - but be able to drive as soon as I am taxed.

you will have purchased it, so tbh i wouldnt worry about being stopped.

just dont leave the car in a place that is frequented by traffic wardens or bobbys on the beat.

doubtful you would be pulled over while driving, as you would show on a PNC as taxed. to be stopped for not displaying would be very harsh.

True but the offence is failing to display, so if you've purchased it or not doesn't matter. It'll still flag up on any of those cameras, I think they have some that check tax don't they?

Depending on where you live it's your call, if you live in a quiet area then you might get away with it :)

I thought there was some other system that went on physically looking at the tax disc? Could well be wrong though :)

pulling people for not displaying would be an absolute joke and a stupid waste of money, as would sending letters to people who are not displaying (should it be automated), as most people who do not display will not have tax, i would imagine that most people who drive without tax do not even have the car registered with the DVLA as owned by them.

though, the way drivers are treated it wouldnt surprise me if people are pulled purely for not displaying after a positive PNC

No would be about it, the offence is failing to display and people do get done for it :)

Can't drive mine tomorrow either because I'm waiting for the Insurance Certificate to come through. Bought the car Thursday so it should have been here Friday, but it's been delayed due to the postal strikes. I have a faxed copy, but they can't accept them. Can't apply online either because it'll send the disc to the former owner. Hmph!!! :(

As a couple of said, its not legal to drive your car with no disk... if you're un-lucky enough to be shot by an ANPR unit, you may get stopped because it takes a little while for the update to go through... you're best just waiting to get it, although its extremley unlikley to get stoppped... but its sunday the police will be bored :p

put it this way mate, i was LESS than impressed with the service.
the only way i'd buy online again is if the expiry date was 3-4 weeks away.

I bought mine last year and was with me the next day. Some friends of mine had the same experience. This year, mine was about 2 weeks. I'm guessing the uptake in people buying them online has caught them out.

@ TakeoverBid - it's not just driving it. If the car is parked on the road then you need to have tax displayed.

@ Ev0 - I'm not sure if they can check tax digitally. Last time I was stopped (18 months ago) the Police Officer had to manually check the tax disk and told me it was the only thing he couldn't check via PNC.

They can only as long as they have an ANPR unit, they are hooked to the central DVLA database which contains the information on the vehicles MOT and Tax status, police national computer only contains information like whether insurance is held...

the instance i'm referring to was september last year, so i think it's a bit too hit/miss to be able to count on your disc turning up in double quick time.
if it was a last minute thing i'd go buy the disc in person, but if i was planing ahead by 3 weeks or so i'd buy online.

I bought mine online last time because I applied after 15th of the previous month. Worked great because I wasn't in a rush to get it. I'd do the same this time, but since I didn't own the car until 28th and the DVLA won't have changed my details yet, there really isn't much I can do. Just hoping that the insurance cert comes through tomorrow.

my tax expired lastnight, i re ordered it the friday before last (ie9 days ago) and its not arrived, i expect thats due to the strike on friday.

ive driven it today, i expect that if any ANPR saw it the reg will come up clean. its amazing that there is an offence for not displaying an uptodate disc if yours is genuinely on its way, but it doesnt suprise me in this stupid country. i expect if i was on the dole id be exempt for paying it or something
