Im on the tax code 522L which ive just found out is emergency tax. I got paid less than £100 yesterday so there was no tax. Next week however I can see my tax sky rocketing.

What do I need to do to get off emergency tax and onto normal tax?

Are you sure that's an emergency code?

AFAIK that means you can earn £5220 in a year tax free. My tax code is something similar.

thanks. more helpful than dirty dog.

apparently its changed for the better. If im only going to be working a couple of months then can i claim all tax back? (as i will be getting way under £5220)

522L I expect is the tax code you should be on - £5,225 tax free per year.

If you're a student only working over the summer who will not earn more than £5,225 between 6th April 07 and 5th April 08 you can fill in a P38(s) form so you aren't taxed.

Without knowing how much you'll be earning next week and if you've been taxed this tax year I couldn't say if your tax will be 'high' or not.

Impossible to really give much info without knowing your other circumstances i.e. is this your only job? Any other sources of income?

just go to the tax office or phone them if you have been taxed rong then they will give it back to you they did it to me and i got all the cash back :D they will help you

Completely standard tax code for someone with one job and no other benefits or deductions to complicate it. I'd imagine there's nothing to worry about.

If you earn below £100 a week, you'll pay nothing - as you found. Over that and you'll start paying tax and NI. If you earn odd amounts per week, it'll all even itself out by the end and you'll not have to claim anything back

eventually, took 3 months before they gave me my money back last time I had to speak to them...they're pretty useless to be honest...

Seems like as good a thread as any to ask this in.

I am being taxed as if the money I earn each month will remain the same all year. In reality, this is not the case. I finish my job next month as its a Uni placement. By which time this tax year I will have earnt just under the yearly taxfree allowance, but I'll still have been taxed nearly a grand so far this year.

Can I claim it back, and if so, must I wait for April? I will be continuing to earn, but at a much reduced rate in my weekend job whilst at Uni.

Could do with the cash to buy some 18".. err I mean books and stuff.

Is there any way of calculating how much I can expect back? It should be almost all of it but I guess I'll still be earning a few hundred or so a month from my part time work.

Simplest way: work out how much you earn (approx) for the year and bung it into the calculator on www.listentotaxman.com

That'll give you the figure for tax that you should've paid, and you should know what you've actually paid.

Bear in mind that you won't get any NI payments back (which you will have been paying as you must've earnt over £100/week).

The quickest way to escape emergency tax is to submit a P45 or fill in a P46. Without either, the employer is obliged to use the emergency code for a period of six weeks I think.
