Hey,

I recently went for a job interview for a desktop support job, second/third line, which also includes me catering for hardware and server issues.

They want me back for a second interview for the technical side of things,
basically I need help with potential questions they may ask, especially in the dos prompt.

E.G "ipconfig" to retrieve info IP addresses etc.

What are others? And anything else they could ask me?

Thanks.

How do you create user accounts in Active Directory?
How do you assign an IP address to a machine (either static or DHCP)?
How do you map drives across the network?
How do you troubleshoot network login failures?

Just a few quick questions that came to my head. Do you know what kind of servers you may be asked to look after? File, print, Exchange, proxy?

Thats the thing, I won't know much about what they cater for.

I'm pretty up to scratch in regards ot the questions you've asked though.

Many years ago I had a similar interview, with mine I was actually given 4 broken computers (3PCs, 1 Mac) and asked to either fix them or if it wasn't possible due to parts to tell the interviewer what the fault was by inspecting them.

I also had a very long test of about 40 questions asked over a hour, simple things like you mentioned how to get the IP address of a computer in DOS on various operating systems and some routine NT server admin work. They were usually looking for a specific answer, usually including the fastest way to do something like:

I need you to ensure that this group of 20 users must change their password at the next login using active directory. Please show me the fastest way to do this.

A new printer has been installed, here's it's MAC address please assign it an IP using active directory.

Our old NT4 server's network card has become faulty please replace it and install the driver, then ping this server (192.168.x.x) to prove it works.

Most of them are really simple and easy to do but they're showing an understanding of the day to day business and duties that you'll have to undertake. Heck some of the answers were included in the question at my interview if you understood what they were on about!

My god, how boring does that sound. Hopefully ill never be working to fix computer problems, i get fustrated enough fixing my own.

That seems simple enough, unfortunately both companys I've worked for don't use Active Directory for password resets etc, So I will need to refresh my memory with all this!

Where can I find tips/guides on the above, I thought I had approriate books on the active directory, but this isnt the case. I need to refresh my memory on it all, any help would be great as the interview is now tomorrow afternoon

Active directory is very similar to NT4 server, there's more too it but the user account admin is essentially the same. It's just common sense.

hint - if in doubt right click it's where most of the commands are :)
