Tell me about: Subaru Impreza Sport

I was looking around on Pistonheads and Autotrader for sub £2000 cars, and was actually looking for things like the Citroen VTS 1.6 because insurance seemed to be best on one (from Bell, £1100 due to accidents), and I'd be keeping the car for about 2 years.

I spotted an Impreza Sport on a 97 plate for £1800 and thought for a laugh I'd see how much it'd cost to insure one...£1000 from Direct Line, Fully Comp, with both my accidents declared and 0NCB. It seems me being 21 (and a month) and having had a full licence since I was 17 and a half makes it possible for me to insure a group 13 car.

I'd like a car with some power, and the Subaru seems like a good choice, but I don't actually know much about them, other than they don't have a turbo. I admit, I could get a VTS for similar money and for about £800 on insurance, but the Subaru just seems a better choice.

I know I won't be able to get the/a car for a few months due to money (although having done a credit rating check thing online I could probably get a loan for the amount, provided I land a placement job), but I think I should research before committing, and I know one or two people have had the Sports on here, and more have had the WRX etc. :)

So yeah, how much should I be looking at spending on one and any other stuff I should be informed about?

120ish bhp in a heavy car through a very lossy 4WD drivetrain.

My old 1.8 Mondeo was faster!

If it was a choice between just those two, get the VTS!

The only place I would consider this was if you wanted an ordinary saloon and lived in the countryside where you might benefit from the AWD

Other than that it doesn't have any real advantage over any other saloon.

:(

Problem is I'm after something that isn't a Mondeo, is under £2k (ideally), isn't French and is a decent size and handles well...not exactly easy to do...till I spotted the Impreza...but seems a bad choice. :D :(

Had a look at 306 GTi 6's? Maybe even clio mk1 16v/williams if your quite handy with a spanner ;)

Just seen you said not french... thats that out :P

Well I tick living in the countryside, no real need for the 4WD, but surely it helps with handling etc. anyway?

Not overly keen on staying French. :p

I'd be more interested in a saloon/large hatch really, rather than small hatches, and want something that isn't going to break lots as I'll be on my placement year as of a couple months so want something reliable.

Maybe thread should have been 'What can I get for £2k?' with 'I found an Impreza Sport' as body. :p

yeah the sport is just a terrible car, even worse when people stick intercooler scoops on them, which many do...imo the car is all about the turbo rush that a na engine will never give :(

i speak from experience having driven a sport before, and owned a sti2.. chalk and cheese

My hunt continues...which is ok, I have loads of time. :)

Was amusing when I put the WRX into DL's quoting system "We can't give you a quote on that." :D

EDIT: And not a fan of Mercs, especially with the W124 getting on for 13 years old for the newest.

I like andi's Sport. Haven't seen it in real life (despite andi living about 5 minutes from my Dad) but I really like how he's styled it.

ScoobyDoo69's was another Sport I liked.

If you just want to impress the laydeez with your car, get the Sport. If you want a pretty quick, chuckable hatch get the VTS.

I'd probably get the Sport as I think classic Scoobs are porn... turbo or not :o

well I'm not gonna stick up for the sport coz there are some owners here, I guess it's a ok car if you don't want any performance / cant afford it due to being young... but it's abit of a 'pretender' as there are so few of them compared with turbo models.

without the bonkers engine the impreza has lost / has no soul

Duhh, rather idiotic me put VTS...I meant the 1.6 VTR. :p

Was wondering why people were praising it. :D

I have a laydeeeeeee so don't need to impress...plus she doesn't want me having something 'big and powerful'...more reason to get the Impreza. :p

One of the major things I've got is that I'll be coming up from small cars with about 50-60bhp (if that) to something large with double (or more) the bhp/hp/whp/whatever it's called now and whilst I'd love something with lots of power I'm more after something with more power than I've had, is practical and looks good. hmmmm

I did look at Rover 216 and 220 Coupés, not too expensive to buy or insure.

InvG

Thats because they are crap! :p the 220 isn't "slow" but the standard brakes are absolutely abysmal. Reliability isn't a huge problem but you might want to buy shares in a bodywork company :p

Well, it is a Rover after all. :p*

I guess I should do a 'spec me' type of thread really, get more input, but it can wait for a bit. :)

Hopefully ScoobyDoo will be able to put some input into the thread though, I don't want to rule the car out entirely, unless £2k is too little for the car.

*I actually quite like some Rovers.

I'm gonna be in a similar position next year, although I'll be 20 and minus the accidents.

I'm looking at the Primera GT's - cost about a grand and should be reliable; decent performance, handling and practicality. But then again I'm also looking at e34/39's too! (seem reasonable to insure and buy, not for you I know).
