Tell Me About the Fiat Bravo HGT

I looked at a FIat Marea with the same engine. I didn't buy it when I discovered you needed to take the engine out to change the cam belt.

You don't need to. I changed the cam belt on my Coupe without removing the engine, and it can also be done on the Marea. In fact you won't find any garage apart from a main stealer doing something so stupid.

1998 is one of the earlier less powerful HGTs (only by about 10bhp).

AFAIK, as is the case with the Coupé, the cam belt can actually be changed with the engine in place if your mechanic has half a brain, certainly all of the main dealers know how to do it by now. FIAT do a good job on the galvanising from mid 90s onwards so rust is a very nearly non-issue. Make sure it has a red key, you don't need the Red key do use it, but if you ever need work doing with ECU's, or you need another blue key, the red one is ESSENTIAL.

One of my friends bought a 98 one about 7 yrs ago from a Alfa dealer. Within a month it had a gearbox oil leak which turned into a nightmare to get sorted. Turned out the gearbox is a weak link and this one had been welded already, then cracked when he owned it. Finally got a new box fitted after lots of mucking about with the Alfa dealer(he paid the labour and they paid for the gearbox), it was a really common problem with them so he was told while he was trying to get it sorted. So he just outed it before he had to pay anymore for repairs. I think he had it about three months in the end.

Its was a nice motor inside though and went like stink.
