My k800i has seen better days and it has a proper flash so thinking of getting a k850i off ebay (Im no massive phone user so contract isnt worth it).

Few things to ask:
What sort of price are these worth getting at (160 inc p+p?)
Do they still crash a lot (I never bothered upgrading my k800i firmware)
Prone to breaking?
I consdiered a n95 8gb but they are very pricey on contract and ebay.

Thanks:)

EDIT: orange has some fair price plans, but they are all 18month ones??

Had mine just over a month now. Not crashed once, after the tip posted by someone else in my thread here the battery charging problem is solved.

Cracking phone all round.

Overall I'm very happy with this phone, I've had it pretty much since release and I really like it. The small square buttons do take a little getting used to. The mini touch screen is a really nice idea. I guess if you're coming from a K800 there's probably many common features already. The only real gripe I have is the finish seems to attract finger prints.

Great phone, I really recommend it!

Few of mates have it and they all come to the same conclusion carp

Well thanks for that. What insightful and reasoned comments.

I'll counter with this :
I've had one for about 4 months. Sim free with the proper software even though it was a T-Mob upgrade. Lucky :D

No crashes, glitches or any real problems. HSDPA is damn quick. Works flawlessly with my SE bluetooth headphones and Apple MacBook Pro.

Keypad takes a bit of getting used to and the touchy buttons things are occasionally a bit finicky. On the upside there's no joystick to break like the K800.

Media player is half decent and it works very well with the above mentioned headphones. Stick a £13 4Gb card in it and it's good enough to have replaced my iPod.

Camera might be 5MP, but in reality the images aren't discernibly better than the 3.2MP K800/810. I'm sticking with my 4MP Nikon Coolpix.

Overall score - 9/10 - marked down for the keypad.

Hateful thing.

Flash is rubbish. Camera controls are crippled compared to K800i. Filesystem corrupts as and when it pleases. Turns itself on and off as and when it pleases. Finish is poor, wearing off after just 6 months. K750/K800 lasted over 12 months before any signs of wear. Crashes a lot.

In hindsight, i'd rather have got another K800i or tried a W series phone.

If we're going to get petty

I thought i'd quickly post that in my experience the phone is carp.Just in case OP was going to buy one quickly and I didn't have the time to post a full answer.

Anyways back on topic.

I love SE was using there phones for god since k700I days I think.

Loved them. But saw my mates k850I and everything is worse at best equal to k800I. And yes this is with STANDARD firmware on.

If you head over to estao forums you will find the same view as myself.

Nokia again in my IMO have over taken SE in the phones unfortunately as I much prefer SE operating system.

In fact I much prefer SE full stop but I am not blind to there products.

Again this is just my opinion which just happens to be shared by the majority of the inter web including sony Ericsson forums.

Either way choose your phone , after the inital 2 - 4 weeks most people use the phone for the same things ringing people and texting people and thats about it

So it's "carp" but you can't tell us why? Well apart from the inter web says so. More insightful discussion.

I really have gone off this phone in recent months.

First off i've had two replacements with software bugs. I've kept the firmware up to date but one started endlessly restarting and another just used to reset randomly.

Second the camera is pretty poor. I only realised how bad it was when i went to a museum at the weekend. My girlfriend was taking pictures with her new N95 and i was taking very similar photos on mine.

Because we were taking pictures of lots of things in glass we turned our flashes off. the difference in quality was amazing. Her photos were better by a mile every time. I even tried switching the iso settings etc but hers were much much better. Add to that, the problems with pictures coming out too dark with flash and the flash burn problems i've actually given up with the flash all together.

Thirdly the UI is too slow. I hate phones that are laggy, it feels like i'm in treacle when i'm using it. In a similar vein, playing back videos that have been encoded for the phone is very slow, the picture lags behind the audio, it will eventually catch up only for you to get a text or press a button and it falls behind again. Music playback is fiddly at best.

I like it that this phone can support push mail with my google account (something the N95 can’t do out of the box) and it can also sync with exchange at the same time (again something the N95 can’t do without 3rd party programmes). However the exchange sync really slows the phone to a crawl, as does the RSS ticker.

The HSDPA support is good, and the battery holds out for a day even under heavy use and with push mail active (a real battery killer). If you turn these things off you can probably get 2.5 days out of it which is good.

The in built browser is OK but limited, i don’t like opera mini at all, too fiddly. I was impressed with the N95 browser.

I was thinking of selling mine and getting an N95 or an N82 but to be honest i blown away with either of them. If only someone could combine an K850i/N82/iphone into one superb phone :)

Did you read any of my post??

I was using the web to back up my opinion on the phone based on me using one for a week or so and seeing my friends swearing at theres when it turns off ,jams takes rubbish pictures etc etc.

Currently, I can think of only one upside to my K850i and that is the fact that whatever I get to replace it will seem absolutely astounding in comparison when I upgrade.

i'm stuck to it on an 18 month contract but to be honest there's no better phone for me at the moment.

I have one and have to say I like it. The screen touch button work on heat, so if your fingers are cold, they wont work as well, yet I have few problems with them.

I don't like the loss of a "Play" button on the phone for media, but resolved that with the HPM-82 headphones which include media functions.

MP3's do randomly stop half way through, for no reason at times, skipping to next track resolves. I have had a few crashes but I am on the Three (rubbish but cheap) network and still have the first firmware.

It can be a little slow at time when navigating through menus, and even stop responding, then catchup with itself. I am sure the newer firmware would resolve my issues but three are so slow in getting the new ones out there.

All in all, a good upgrade from the k800i, expect a few glitches here and there, nothing major, which will improve with time. It also have a very good PC suite which give you access to texts and files really easily. You can use USB or bluetooth.

I have had mine for a couple weeks now. Pretty much nothing good to say though.

The touch screen buttons I struggle and get annoyed with. Half the time I have to hit them several times to do an action.

The small square keys on the key pad are uncomfortable and horrible to use.

The finish on the back and the touch buttons on the front mean you cannot avoid having your phone constantly covered in finger prints.

Not had any crashes/software/battery issues. Just the actual design of the phone is poor.

is the k850i an easily unlocked phone?
Also does it use the same charger as the k800i?

Unlock - dunno. I was lucky and got a unmolested one.

Same charger as any recent SE eg K750/800, W810 etc.

No hard facts in that post at all. "Epic Fail" to quote the kids.
