Tell me why I shouldn't get City Life....

You can get Sim City 4 in the high street shops complete with Rush Hour mod in the budget section, which adds far better transport options and roads to use.

I don't think it'll hold my interest tbh due to rubbish graphics.

I think I'm gonna get City Life 2008 on the 15th, then get the new Monte Christo thing in June.

The New York Tycoon game is more of a business/franchise developer although you can upgrade and place new buildings for your businesses and the areas develop with it.

Another vote for Sim City 4 here. I absolutely love it.

I don't know why everyone always wants better graphics all the time. It doesn't always guarantee a better game.

Graphics does not, a good game, make. One of the best and fluid gameplay RTS games in my eyes is from 1997. It's exactly the same with these city simulations, my favourites are Sim City 3000 and Sim City 4 because the gameplay is just so good and challenging. I've never been able to get a massive city in SimCity 4 going because its just so challenging early on and the fact that i've never been really committed to making a large city work. I prefer small towns. But when you finally get that skyscraper, you feel like you've really achieved something.

Nobody is suggesting that graphics makes the game. There are too many 3d city builders that fall short of mildly interesting for that to be the case. What we're saying is, there isn't a great 3d city builder out there. This means that it's wide open for someone to develop a superb city builder that looks stunning and has the depth to keep us fans building for a long, long time. Perhaps Cities Unlimited will be the one.

People have mentioned RTS games. Tiberian Sun was the defacto 2d RTS and was awesome. As soon as 3d RTS' come out they were poor. Now look at them. Just play World in Conflict as an example that 3d works, whatever the genre.

Personally, I think SC4 is awesome and still play it now. It needs updating with stunning 3d, all the complexities of a modern city refined and a better sense of scale when in city mode. I'm sure we've all got a wish list.

Absolutely. If a real 3D version of Sim City 4 was made that kept the exact same system as the original SC4. It would be the monumental game of epic proportions. But i do agree that all 3D city games currently, fall short of the SimCity series. Hopefully, if a SimCity 5 is released, it'll be a fully 3D world but keeping with the SimCity style. I'd buy that without a second thought, and yes, the first few RTS games in full 3D were poor but they are superb now.

Every genre that enters uncharted territory, like city sims moving to full 3D will have problems, but once more games appear, they'll get better and better.

I disagree, imo WiC sucks, the only few good 3d RTWS games are the total war games, CoH and supreme commander... After that, 2d > 3d, I still play C&C RA2 more often than most modern RTS games...

Tbh I'm hoping for a new sim city, developped by maxis again instead of some unknown company. Even more advanced than SC4, but at the same time good looking.

Most people disagree but each to their own.

Aren't we all. I sincerely hope that SC5 is a polished Maxis developed game that brings new depths to the genre and looks fantastic too.

Why would a man want to play the Sims? Unless there is something you'd like to tell us.
He's only 16. If you think he's a man I'm 34 and still play city building sims. It beats knitting and crosswords.

anyway...

could someone kind of say why City Life isn't as good as SC4, ignoring graphics, because I can't see anything massively better.

tbh, I'm used to 3D games now, and the last city builder I played was SimCity 2000, so whatever I get i'll be happy.

I think the point is that no-one can actually say why you should get one over the other, since they really require different play styles. If you don't want to get SimCity4 because you think the graphics are rubbish and you won't be able to play it properly, then don't get it! No-one can make that decision for you..

I'd recommend SC4 simply because it's a fantastic game, but I can't recommend City Life because: 1) I didn't think the 3D graphics made a poor game any better and 2) it was just different from SC4 and I was too stubborn to adjust.

Sim city is far superior in terms of depth and city building. Which is what you buy a City building game for afterall. City life got bogged down in a clunky class system that ruined the game for many users.

Like I said before, with all the mods over at Simtropolis and elsewhere, you should pick up SC4 for a fiver, and keep your fingers crossed that Cities unlimited will fulfill its massive potential.

That's what I would do. I haven't returned to City Life after the initial buzz of buying it. SC4 however keeps me coming back. The problem with SC4 is the initial 'getting into it'. It seems old and a bit awkward but give it a chance and you'll spend months building empires.

As for Cities Unlimited fulfulling its massive potential, it's because the genre is in the doldrums that there is potential and I sincerely hope they do it. Somehow though I don't think the hardnut city builders will be happy until Maxis develop a new game and call it SC5.
