I'm interested to see what motivated everyone to start body building / getting fit and to see where you started from.

Was there one thing that sparked the change or did it build up over several years?

What keeps you going?

How has you life changed since you started?

As a n00b I'm really keen on finding out as much as I can!

Cheers :)

My mate started going to the gym and about a year and a half later got cocky and started mocking my gut and strength. I thought I would go to the gym, lift a few weights and put him in his place. That didn't happen :(

I started going to the gym with the sole intention of outlifting him and never thought I would enjoy it as much as I do. It took me about a year to match his bench and a further six months to match his deadlift and squat. I've now been going to the gym for just over two years and have only just taken the lead. Now I mock him :D

In those two years I've gone from 13.5 stone and looking chubby to 17.5 stone, at my heaviest, and looking much leaner.

The problem I've got now is he's started to use the pound-for-pound card so now I've got to lose weight and out pound-for-pound him.

pigeon just out of interest did you jump straight into bulking, diet and lifting wise? I dropped a lot of bodyfat but still feel a bit chubby and have a bit of fat left giving me slight manboobs (REALLY annoys me) I dont want to cut further as im already very light 64kg (was 61.8kg a short time ago) so im wondering if bulking actually will improve my body shape while putting on muscle or whether it'll just add to the fat making me bigger and strong but looking like a flabby crap.

I started when i left school at 16. Started taking rugby quite seriously but needed a lot more bulk and muscle than i was carrying at the time. I left school at 5'7" and 9.5 stone could bench press 40k max for only a few reps. After 4 yrs of hard work at the gym to a dedicated plan, playing lots of rugby and also silly amounts of rugby training i topped out at 13.5st , so a gain of 4 stone and could press 100k quite easily which i was overjoyed with, had 13% BF, could do the bleep test to 15 and run the hundred in 11 seconds.

Sadly none of the above can be achieved now, but trying hard to get it back!

Nope. When I started I had no idea what a bulk was and just ate the same as I had done before.

As long as you eat a relatively clean diet there's no reason why you can't keep fat gains to a minimum while on a bulk. Your body shape will most definitely improve if you manage to gain mostly muscle. I've probably got as much fat on me now as I did two years ago but because I've gained a lot of muscle my bodyfat percentage has dropped and I now look leaner. Hope that makes sense :)

Started because i was a fatty, i was 16 and nearly 18st of just pure fat, so i started out to lose weight, but then i just happend to come across arnold when he was bodybuilding and I just said to myself i want to look like him, so its al come from there really.

Im now 17st 4lbs (weighed in hospital) with a waist that is nearly 10" smaller, i still look crap and my weights are average, but ive done ok since i started training.

Weedyness. If thats a word.

I used to play Sunday football and as we got older, the players got bigger. I'm 6'2 but my upper body was rather weak.

Manager told me I needed to strengthen up as I was being pushed off the ball.

I also wanted to do it for myself though. I've seen friends that have gone and the rewards were great. Needed a feel good factor.

5 months later and I have put on a stone in muscle and I'm determined more than ever to keep going.

My mates dad used to be a bodybuilder (Mr South West I think?) and was a large fella and looked great. He had all his weights and setup in my mates garage and me and him really just got using it lightly one day. I remember a day many years ago now during a squat session, when me and my mate still really had no idea what we were doing and his dad came in and just loaded the bar with plates to a stupid level and just started squatting. We just sat back in awe and said to eachother now that's where I want to be :D

In a crap turn of events I had to move house and stopped training for 3 years and got back into it eventually by the same event. Walked into my garage and there was the bench and all the weights setup (My mate had let me have all the weight, a really great gift as he gave me 500lbs of weight in total) and so I just started again. During the years I had been off I had read a lot about bodybuiding and weight training in general so I had a much larger knowledge base and a much better idea of how everything worked and was able to plan myself a routine and diet and to this day it's working great.

And a (obviously completely unintentional ;) ) benefit was that the attention from the women about it all has been phenominal!

I used to weigh a a lot after one year of uni (16 & 1/2 stone!) and I am 5'11". I really needed to do something about it as I was so round! Slowly but surely (over the course of 2/3 ish years) I have lost the weight and I now weigh 13.5 stone and am looking to cut now as I need some definition as I am going to Ibiza in August :D

I have always been a big lad, so I used to do weights a lot but no cardio which I found was my downfall, but now I am on it and hopefully with the right diet and exercise I will be in good shape for August!

I've always been the eat whatever I want and still look nice and lean (mesomorph). Still, I just simply want to look bigger and be stronger and i'm motivated purely by this, although it is nice when people comment and notice your improving :p

There's the possibility i've got the genetics for it, my old man was quite heavily into bodybuilding and competed and the pictures of his conditioning are quite something. This was when he was around 21 though, he gets quite embarassed by it now for some reason haha.

Styles, is that you in your sig?!

Pretty sure it is Arnold.

As for the original question, I started going to the gym to get a bit fitter and try to put on a bit of muscle because I've always been pretty slim (still am). In some regards I've succeeded but I've not been focused enough to do too much, particularly as I haven't properly sorted out my diet but it is interesting learning as I go. :)
