Tennis

Well I'm sure he is encouraged by his performance last night, despite the loss and despite what social media might be saying today.

Hopefully, he can have a good run at the European Open next week.

Excellent

Yeah, he's playing Schwartzman (@7pm tonight), who he has a 2:1 head-to-head against, so a definite possibility he could make it to the SFs.

If he wins tonight he'll be the new British #1 and break into the top 20 for the first time.

Norrie takes the first 6-0!

...and takes the second 6-2.

He will play Dimitrov in the SF and has a very good chance of making the final.

I realise this isn't the place for this, but it's better than an unnecessary new thread. Just had the most fantastic week at a tennis camp in Mallorca - played about 18 hours of tennis across 4 days, with some good coaches and some really top "club" players, including a couple of guys who were junior pros. Learned an absolute ton. If anyone's in need of a holiday and likes a bit of an activity I can't recommend it highly enough. Although I'm now shattered!

That sounds good - I wish I had got into playing tennis when I was younger.

I hope it's a good match and you get to see some great play.

Fingers crossed Norrie does enough to win!

Yeah, he was at a very high level in his last match - playing like that and he'll give anybody a good game.

It's good to see Dimitrov playing well, too.

There was a real mix of players. We split into three groups, some were excellent and others were absolute beginners - everyone there was between about 30 and 55 or so.

Ah well, that's not so bad then, I was thinking it would be younger people, maybe I'll give something like that a go one day then.

I loved playing tennis when I was at boarding school. Particularly on the grass but I spent most of my time in the bushes trying to find the balls!

I think being Scottish, I have more of a fondness for Murray but I'm intrigued to see how far Norrie goes.

Norrie father is Scottish... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameron_Norrie

Norrie won! I didn't get to see the match but good to see him make it to another final.

Cracking women's final, a proper battle with Babosa taking it in a third set tie-break.

Norrie's up next.

Norrie wins a Masters 1000! Not a terrific final in all honesty but good to see Norrie win, first Brit to win Indian Wells.

$1.2m winners cheque, up to 16th in the rankings, up to 10th in the race and new British #1!

I see Murray just won against Hurkacz @Pigeon_Killer, first time beating a top10 player since the surgery (edit: not his first top 10 win since surgery, forgot about Zverev).

He's also now moved into the top100 in the live race.

If he can stay injury-free, top 20 is definitely a possibility.

He's got Alcaraz next which will be a very tough match, but Murray winning the last time they played gives a degree of optimism.

I didn't get to watch Raducanu's match but good to see her get her first WTA win after what looks to have been a shaky start to the match.

Hopefully this settles her down a bit and she can re-focus.

Imo, it hasn't been a great 45 days for her, tennis-wise, after the US Open - seeing her say that she needs to 'find my tennis' again wasn't really surprising, tbh.

Good to see Norrie win again and we have Murray playing Alcaraz tomorrow, Amazon are saying 4:30pm start.

Yeah, Murray doesn't really want these long matches.

- Alcaraz takes the set 6-3, but that was a very hard fought 6-3.

Yeah, free movement in the swing, I thought the same in the first set.

Both players looking tired now, not surprising.

Regardless of the outcome of this match, Murray just needs to keep on doing what he's doing and he'll get there.

Edit: In fact, Alcaraz is looking a little more fatigued than Murray, atm.

Alcaraz takes it but it was definitely encouraging to see Murray play at such a high level in the first set, after coming through a tough match on Monday.

Tomorrow it's Norrie Vs Auger-Aliassime and Raducanu Vs Bogdan.

The way I see it is that he's currently trying to win against top players twice in a row, that's what his short-term goal is, I think.

In any stand-alone match he could currently give any top player a good battle, but recovering and doing it again the next day or even two days later is what he's trying to improve.

He's not quite there yet but for a good, very hard fought, 40-45 mins today he was playing excellent tennis and wasn't as fatigued as he was a few weeks back in similar situations, so I only see positives despite the defeat.

The scoreline doesn't fully tell the story. At times there even Alcaraz was taking a while to recover in between points.

Murray is getting (match) fitter, moving better and probably most importantly, thinking clearer.

That's the way I see it anyway. I think he's justifying the wildcards as well, tbh.

Should she have gotten rid of her coach who helped her achieve what she was able to or continue to work with the guy?

If I understand this correctly, Nigel Sears (her coach at Wimbledon) and Andrew Richardson (her coach at the US Open) were only temporary arrangements, apparently.

Andrew Richardson doesn't/didn't want to be her coach full-time as he wants to stay in the UK and coach his own son, who is one for the future apparently.

Jeremey Bates was temporarily brought in for Indian Wells, but he is committed to Katie Boulter (asaik).

She's had trials with a couple of other coaches since, with Johanna Konta's ex coach being one of them (can't remember his name off the top of my head) but the trials don't seem to have worked out for whatever reason.

I think she shouldn't have taken her foot off the gas for as long as she did after winning the US Open. Take a week off maybe but get straight back to competitive matches as soon as possible. After the US Open win she probably did too much media stuff and Raducanu herself saying that she needed to 'find my tennis' said it all, imo.

One thing I have read in a few places now and heard commentators say is that her father is the one that calls the shots i.e. coaches need to be prepared to work with him as well, which is apparently not easy.

I think she's possibly been badly advised so far, that would be my guess, but just have to see what happens next.

Edit: Just having a quick read about and some media sites are saying that Andrew Richardson was 'axed' but I don't think that's correct. I remember Mark Petchey and Tim Henman (they're all mates) saying at the time that it was only ever going to be a short-term thing.
