Tesco Self Service Till and Using Own Bags

I find it hard to control my temper with these people, as well as those who seem incapable of correcting a simple mistake, like when an item doesn't scan and the damn thing tells them to take it out again, yet they stand around looking lost like it'll fix itself. Some people should just not be allowed out of the house.

There's three categories of this..

1) The office bimbos who queue in pairs to buy a salad tray and bottle of water. At the first sign of a problem they stand and attempt to "fix" the problem themselves then mutter about the stupid machines whilst rolling their eyes a lot.

2) The older folk who generally seem confused on the operation of such a machine that they stand for what seems like years, staring at the display message asking "do you have your own bag?" whilst attempting to flag down a checkout supervisor.

3) The people that can operate the machine and get held up by people in categories 1 and 2.

so your saying supermarkets are expensive? go shop at your local corner shop. They are in a massive price war with each other and will do what ever they can to reduce costs and this get cheaper goods.

So you also believe that supermarkets cut costs just to pass it onto the consumer? They cuts costs to improve profits as all businesses are doing. Price drops are squeezed from the producers and even then not all are passed on.

They cut costs for both reasons. A to undermine competion and hence get more customers and to increase profits. They get far more profit by reducing price and selling it in teh millions than keeping prices teh same and sellign far less volume.

Don't even get me started on "Please put your own bags". I always use my back bag as a bag but it's heavy so it always locks the till. Luckily always there is someone to approve the bags within 10 seconds.

I actually quite like the self checkout tills.

I just put the stuff directly on the bagging area then put it my bags after i've paid. Then I have no problems. i like seff checkout also. there's never a queue ever.

How do the scanners at the exit work? When you scan the barcode in the till, does it do something that prevents the scanners from going off if you walk out of the shop with an item unpaid for? Just curious.

Expensive items will still have security tags or plastic cases on them. The person watching the self scan till will remove them for you.

There are a number of different security methods that supermarkets use. The plastic cases obviously get removed at the checkout, but some items have a tag inside them that is deactivated when the item is scanned.

I always get my bags ready in the baggage area before I scan the first item, that way you can pack it quick before it comes up with any messages. Or you can just pack after you paid of course ;)

Don't know if this happens at any other tesco's (or is even supposed to happen) but the Tesco Metro I go to get my lunch in the mornings usually has no staff on tills with the only option being to self checkout?

Unrelated shopping rant: What is it with people that do a big shop at 7:30am in a small Tescos? One person at self checkout with a trolley with a weeks worth of food in it and queue of 10 angry looking commuters trying to decide between buying lunch or missing the train

Someone who works night/evening shifts?

Your beef should be with Tesco for not having proper checkout staff!

Thank god for on-line shopping is all I can say, never have to deal with this crap. Though I can't imagine why I would go to the supermarket to buy a few items when I could just go to the co-op anyway.

I've never had any problem with using the bags since I realised one thing....

Place your bag and open it enough on the scale/bag area before you hit the start button ?

I got stuck behing some dozy bint earlier today. When asked if she had her own bag she had to ask for help from the supervisor and then stood looking at the machine like it was speaking in Manderin or something. Eventually figured out how to scan stuff so we were on a roll.

A minute or so later her obese toddler decides he is bored and is going to help by climbing on the machine to which the machine replies "Please remove the last item from your bag".

So what does she do? Removes EVERYTHING from the bags and tries to start again

"Please put the last item back in the bag"
EH?
"Please remove the last item from the bag"
Kid still standing on the scales.

At this point to save her from the wrath of the que behind me i helpfully suggested that perhaps her son wasnt helping by standing on the scales and the machine thought she had just bought the worlds largest pack of bacon.

She looked at me like I had just ****ed on her shoes. She could not understand how her son standing on it would affect the machine and the fact that a member of the public had dared to offer assistance seemed to offend her.

In the end i gave up and walked past the checkouts to the tobacco stand to pay as I only wanted a sandwich for lunch.

I normally find self checkout great but some people should not be let out of the house let alone to scan their own shopping!
