What car do you have at the moment?

And I assume you mean Elise ;)

Depend if you have a local dealer with an old one in stock, private buyer isnt going to take kindly to a test pilot.

If you turn up in an old Fiesta, say WIKED MATE, then the chance is zero.

If you turn up in something credible that the average Elise buyer might be trading up from, you'll stand a better chance.

My other half has been looking for cars recently and dealers have been throwing test drives at us. Partially due to the fact we turn up in my car which is an 07 plate. When I was looking and turning up in a W reg shed it was hard to get near any car.

Recently two different dealers let us have the keys to 3 different cars after no more than 10 minutes without trade plates and sent us on our ways on our own. Not bad for two 19 year olds?

I've been thinking if it's this easy I'm quite tempted to go and test drive Type R's, Cupra's, GTi's etc just to see how they drive and if I like them.

What you turn up in and the impression you give has a massive effect I feel on what you will be able to test drive.

I turned up to a lotus dealership in my old mondeo ST (mk2, not an ST but to anyone who isnt a mondeo buff it is :p), and drove the 111R a few times. Just act like you actually want the car, ie ask appropriate questions dont just say "can i drive it".....ask for information on the different trim levels, the packs etc, boring stuff that doesnt matter unless you're buying one. He then offered to take me out. I was 19 at the time.

very very good :D I will almost defintiely own one at some point, most involving car ive driven by a country mile and nowhere near as rough as i expected.....brilliant motor :)

I find ringing up first helps too. I rang up my local mazda dealer asked for a go in a new mx-5. I did say i was planning on buying one though...which is a lie. Turned up in my trampy RX-7 though and they didn't have a problem what so ever :D

Yeah phoning and asking if they have a used car with X trim and Y engine makes it look like you've done your research and are seriously after a certain car.

i turned up to mazda last weekend with my 02 plate 330i sport and my other half. Said that I wanted a test drive 2.0 sport but due to there being two of us and only 2 seats, no dealer could come with. He through some keys at me and said bring it back when you're done!

Easy get out of jiail car too, put the roof up and I didnt fit! = no hassle from them in future.
