Hi guys, been reading a learner drivers forum for a while now and ive noticed some people have failed for up to their 8th time!

What do you think about this?, should there be a limit on the amount of times you take a test?

PS : Did you pass first time?

(Gladly passed mine first time :) )

I took 4

I didnt fail because I was a bad driver, but because I got so nervious during the test that I kept making silly mistakes that in my lessons Id never make

Its not always because people are inept at driving

A female friend at college took hers 9 times before she passed, she was a very good driver and still is but it was the test that messed her up, put so much stress on her that she would make silly mistakes. Some people pass first time, doesnt mean they are good drivers.

Yup, 3 strikes and you're out!!!

When I was a nipper I remember our next door neighbour took 19 attempts to pass her test. After she finally passed she reversed off her drive and ended up through the front fence of the house over the road. She never drove again after that, too scared. It was all very exciting, I was at primary school at the time :D

Passed 2nd time for car and bike, failed car for hesitating when pulling out of a junction, failed bike test because it bloody well broke down!!!

I wouldnt have a final limit that lasts.. but i would say maybe 3 tests a year.. fail and come back next year mate..

i passed first time tho :p

I wouldn't say after a certain amount of tries you should be permantly out, but after a number of tries (say five) I reckon you should be disqualified from taking any more for say 3 years, people change a lot say between 17 and 20, and can cope with things better, and if it was a limited number you might waste them all trying to do it when you are young and foolish and mess up your whole life.

Oh yes, can I just add that people who stop at the bottom of slip roads and then inidicate to enter a dual carriageway or motorway should have their licence removed, and be shot, and beaten with large sticks too. I nearly wore a Passat as an ornament on my bonnet this afternoon

There was some mild ranting and leaping about in my car :o

some of my mates are STILL trying to pass there tests, even though they started doing tests BEFORE i started learning... and ive passed, and been driving like 5 months now.. :p

i feel sorry for them

No, but they have a nervous disposition, which could be just as bad.

I passed theory and practical first time. Had 14 lessons, but drove with parents/brother in my own car everyday which I think is essential. Just doing lessons means you don't get anywhere near the ammount of road experience.

I think a mandatory advanced driving course after 6 months is the way to improve drivers skill levels.

To be honest its the standard that the learner has reached by the time they finally pass which is important to me. How many attempts it takes them to get to that level is irrelevant.

I took 3 to pass. I drove better on the first test than on my 3rd. I was genuinely surprised when I failed the first. The second I failed before I got out of the car park (long story) and when I passed my 3rd the examiner saw and heard my relief (as I thought I'd failed) and turned to me and said, "it's not a very nice experience is it?" My answer was obvious.

The test experience is enough to make even the best pupils make stupid mistakes because of the sheer pressure on you, and everyones circumstances are different. The pressure for me was needing to drive to get to work but also the fear of failing and it costing me more money than I could afford at the time It's nothing to do with having a nervous disposition or driving ability for a lot of failures, for some, yes.

I don't think there should be a limit on it, but people should themselves know whether they are cut out for driving or not and loads of failures should tell them that.

I passed first time :D

tho i think 5 should be the limit then you should have to wait a while after that.

i do know someone else who passed 3rd time, on his first test he got 7 majors

how do you do that?

An absolute limit isn't really fair or workable but a more realistic option would be to limit the number you can take in a given time span, say 2 or 3 per year.

This would stop people simply re-applying for tests non-stop until they luck their way through one.

I passed third time.

Doesn't really matter how many times you take it, you've still got to get to the same standard as someone who passed first time.
