My gf has just gone to Australia, if I text her on her UK number am I right in thinking these txts don't cost any extra but just come out of my allowance? I'm assuming she will have to pay to receive them. :o

I'm under the impression that what will normally happen, as you say, is that you'll be charged the normal amount for a UK number (after all, it would be unfair to charge you more since you aren't to know that the number isn't in the UK) and she'll be charged per-message for receiving them.

Never actually done it myself though.

as PinkPig said, i think it just comes off your allowance, but will probably cost her to recieve it

If you were texting a number that wasnt from the UK then it would cost you to send it

When i text my friend in the US with a US number it costs me 10p to send it on o2

When I went to Barcelona last year, I didnt pay anything to receive the txts I got, but everyone I sent was the equivalent of me sending 4 txt messages back here, as in you have a quarter of your normal allowance eg

At home, 1000 txts = able to send 250 txts abroad before you go over your allowance.

You shouldn't be charged for recieving a text while abroad these days, that was done away with by most networks about 2 or 3 years ago.

Texts sent from the UK to a UK mobile number (irrespective of where it is in the world) should come out of your allowance.

It might be worth double checking with your provider just in case. I know the above information is correct for Orange, and believe it to be correct for all, but check with them directly.

Keep in mind sometimes it's cheaper to send MMS rather than SMS with people abroad, no idea why but on T-Mobile it's half the price to send an MMS over an SMS! Plus you get the added benefit to send random images.

Remember this is when you send MMS when you are abroad, not sending abroad. T-Mobile's system can't classify the MMS as international so the billing system just charges the normal rate of MMS rather than an international message like a SMS.

RE: SMS.

You only pay to send to a normal number in the UK (i.e. it comes out of your allowance) and it does not cost anything to receive the SMS when in OZ. As Dolph has confirmed for Orange, I can confirm for 3 and o2 that this is the case.

When i was in Canada, i was never charged for receiving texts but me sending texts back to the UK cost me double or nearabouts double. People texting me were getting charged about double as well.

The bit about sending SMS is right, however are you sure that people were charged double to send messages to yourself?

Were you using a UK mobile on a network in Canada? Its just there is no way for the sender to know that you are abroad and therefore the sender's network to know that you are abroad to have any special pricing.

Im with 3, and sending sms to a UK number which is abroad comes out of my allowance, so do calls

Yes my uk sim card was using the rogers network in Canada, when i got back i checked with the people that sent me texts and they said they were being charged around 50p for each text they sent me. Same with me, i was being charged around 50p for each text i was sending back to the uk.

when i was in europe my texts to the uk were charged at double as i get 500 free texts they took 2 per text

Yeh same with mine, i get £250 worth of credit on tmobile and was getting charged 2 texts when sending a text from Canada to the UK.

I wish texts to home from abroad on Orange were taken from my unlimited texts package. I go away about 10 times a year on business, for a week at a time, and my bills skyrocket to about £300 each time I do, because of the amount of texts I send.

With O2 it costs 4 text messages of your allowance to send a text home whilst abroad, but costs you nothing to receive, and costs whoever sends you messages nothing extra

Enabled voda 'passport' when i went to spain for a week last summer, txt messages cost an extra 25p to send (and i think to receive) and calls cost 75p connection charge, but then could talk for upto an hour at no additional cost - used this several times to other friends out there on other mobile networks, worked great as most of their mobiles wouldn't.

Watch what network you should be using, my fone automagically swopped networks later in the week several times and cost me about £300.
