yes, the car went in for a service... they changed the brake fluid, and thats about it, so my car has come back still whining, steering as heavy as if it was missing wheels, and occasionally failing to start.
Mechanics/garage say everything is fine- is it just me who thinks they dont know what they are talking about?

A proper service includes a lot more than a brake fluid change. Might help if you said what car it was etc.
Repairing broken power steering isn't part of servicing but, they should have informed you of any problems with it.
if its squealing or groaning it could be air bubbles trapped in the steering fluid or the drive belt slipping.

Its a Fiesta 1.25 16v on an R plate. The power steering is appauling - its incredibly difficult to turn the wheel at a standstill or a slight roll - heavier than a non-PAS car.

The whining sound isn't consistant with the revs - it stays the same regardless.

The battery has been replaced, however it didn't really solve the slight difficulty in starting.
