An experimental HIV vaccine has cut the risk of infection by nearly a third in a major trial, researchers say.

The vaccine - a combination of two earlier experimental vaccines - was given to 16,000 people in a joint trial by the Thai government and US military.

It reduced by 31% the volunteers' risk of contracting HIV, the virus that leads to Aids.

Good to see Thailand making progress towards solving one of it's biggest problems.

Did you know it is estimated that HIV could be completly wiped out for $1trillion

The problem being the countries where it is a major issue don't have $1 trillion?

It's a throw away comment that has been made about virtually every issue on the planet. Did you know that for $1 trillion dollars we could save the rain forests? etc etc etc.

Back on topic any progress on a Vaccine is obviously good news.

How so?

Is HIV really the most pressing issue facing mankind today? Especially as most people who get the disease inflicted it on themselves by their lifestyle.
I tend to agree. Condom = your vaccine. I dread to think what would happen to the world if there was no STI threat. Plan B has already messed up society and has effectively become a prophylactic.

There is negligible risk of mother to child transmission with the right drugs (there in lies the problem in developing countries) and intravenous drug users deserve it. Plus circumcision (as barbaric as it is) has been shown to have very promising results.

Yes it's their own fault for having sex.

(I suggest you move on from the victorian era attitude you seem to be clinging on to)

Haha :D Is that your contention, that having sex gives you HIV? Well having promiscuous, unprotected anal sex with multiple partners might. But condom usage lowers the risk of transmission to near nil. Likewise sharing drug needles isn't very clever either.

How many people in the UK suffer from HIV, compared to things like cancer or heart disease? IIRC the numbers are tiny.

One of them, yes.

i don't think its Victorian.

when i went for my check up the other day and had the HIV test. my doctor told me and i quote....

unless you have been having unprotected intercourse with sex workers or you are homosexual or having unprotected sex with sub Saharan Africans you are in a very very low risk category.

if this is the case why does that make his opinion Victorian?

i tested NEGATIVE BTW!! woooo!!!

Something tells me that if you had tested positive your opinion may have been somewhat different.

It still wouldn't be Victorian. Victorian would be if I was against people having sex outside marriage, or for reasons other than procreation :p

then i would have been very very unlucky!!

i still agree with dirtydog. there are surely more pressing things to be spending $1 trillion dollars on?
