Thank god my car is pre 2001 (Car Tax changes)

"Cars emitting over 226g CO2/km but bought before Budget 06 will move into Band K in 2009-10 — and will continue to benefit from a reduced rate, and only in 2010-11 will these cars be placed into the band that corresponds to the car’s CO2 emissions.”

Interesting! I've not seen that mentioned anywhere else...

Gordon brown is a muppet, and the British public is, collectively, also a muppet if they don't string him up for his economic incompetance. Tax and spend is just about the worst economic approach going short of the government trying to manage the whole economy, and yet this muppet keeps doing it, and some people are stupid enough to believe it will help the enviroment...

Well, if you got an Alpina B5S over an M5, very similar power but the B5S has more torque as it's a supercharged V8, the B5S will cost £200 a year to tax under the engine size regime, but the M5 costs £440 a year with a stupidly high first year tax too.

Yeah, that's new. I've not seen that in any of the supporting documents from the budget.
Even so, this still takes the VED on my Lexus from £210 to £300.

It's disgusting what they are doing with this. I don't understand how they can justify back-dating a tax bracket. If we all go out and buy new cars, the pollution involved in building them far outweighs the CO2 saved by replacing an older car. And anyway, are 2005 cars going to be scrapped or taken of the road? No, they will just devalue.

Yet more taxation under the banner of environmentalism. It makes me sick.

Anyone who votes Labour in the local elections tomorrow is IMO a complete and utter fool. A sweeping statement I know but I am sick and tired of tax tax tax, nanny state, do what you're told rubbish.

Why don't we rise up against this rubbish? Oh, that's right, we can't as we'll be branded terrorists and arrested.

They make a blooming big fuss about paying your car tax too with TV adverts etc. constantly making you feel like a victim then they rob you blind anyway.

It would be nice to know in detail why we pay our road tax. I keep saying this but the roads I travel are terrible and the only time they're worked on is when a contractor needs to fix something under the road, not the road itself. They fill potholes and within a week they're a crater again.

We have to pay for most if not all parking where we commute to too, which gets on my nerves. I go out of my way to find a nice spot near to work what isn't regulated only get notes off some hormonal pregnant bint who can't park 10 yards away from her house to carry the damned shopping and asks me to park elsewhere. I see the logistical issues of free-range parking but they could make an effort. If there was a free car park accross town I'd use that over parking closer to work in front of peoples houses.

I don't mind paying car tax, but It would be nice to know how its used. It's car tax and should be spent as such. I can't help but feel I'm subsidising gold plated bathroom fittings and herpes treament. Oh well, /me burns money.

This months Evo states that Alpina's come with a C02 rating. Is that correct?

Don't think it is - maybe it's changed though.

“The arrogance of Darling is astonishing. When questioned in a radio interview following the budget he suggested that those affected needn’t pay higher VED as they could buy new cars.

I don't get this. Surely the impact on the envionment is greater to design, build and produce a brand new car in materials and factory output than it is to keep a car less than 7 years old on the road?

Not to mention that if people can't afford to pay the stupidly increased charges, how can they afford to change their car? Especially if they own a people carrier, large estate or 4x4 because they actually need one...

Typical of these cowboys in charge of our country.

You now get taxed on the decision you may have made a few years ago on what car you bought:confused:
A nice retrospective tax that they have tried to usher through, ********

This has nothing to do with the enviroment and it never has, if they took the issue of the enviroment that seriously then car manufacturers would be forced to only make cars under a certain CO2 rating and public transport would be heavily subsidised and more available.
They are using it as a smokescreen to get more revenue, it's that simple.

What are they going to do next, backdate stamp duty based on current prices against what you paid for your property:o

Complete and utter bunch of fools, who have never and will not get my vote at any election.

It's a joke really because all these tax increases do is kick in the balls those who bought a new car in the last 7 years, when they could well have bought their car thinking they were getting something environmentally friendly

Whereas people like myself driving ancient pre 2001 runabouts, knowing our cars are not environmentally sound get no incentive whatsoever to buy a new car, because our tax doesn't change, and anything above us that isn't brand new will be higher rate of tax than our smokey old cars.

Surprise surprise :( That's Labour's token party trick... take from the rich (that can afford newish cars) and give back or let off the poor who drive around in old cars. All the while, trying to convince everyone that it is doing good for the country and the environment.

Nobody would mind, in principle, about reforming the way car tax is conducted. It's the way they are doing it at the moment that annoys people. By brainwashing the public to think it is being done for the environment... But it just isn't. It's being done to start paying back the massive loans they have taken out for the Iraq war, the NHS and all the other problems the country has had. I'm sure some of it will end up paying for the Olympics too

Ill be sticking with Pre 2001 cars until i can justify the 400 a year tax on something newer that i would want. Even people who are unlucky enough to have a Y reg or a rare 51 plate 200sx will get shafted £400 next year where i will be paying £200 for my X plate 200sx. Even though its the same car
