Well it seems the FA have finally had the balls to do something right for a change.

Ben Thatcher gets 8 match ban (Backdated to include 2 from the ban already imposed by Man City) and 15 weeks suspended for 2 years.

I would have liked to have seen the initial ban be a bit longer but 15 weeks suspended for 2 years is sound.

Doubtfull why?

He's got an attitude problem that needs professional help, if he doesn't sort it out he doesn't play football, seems sound to me.

Why? Why not? Does his action happened on the pitch excempt him from the law on the land? Just because he get punish from his employers and governing bodies does not mean he is outside the law. The law doesn't say you won't get arrested because you play football or someone else take away your allowances for a few weeks.

He should be arrested, and get the appropriate sentencing by the court.

But what's the police going to do?

If I wack someone like that on camera i'd be locked up !

The FA is independent of the law agencies in its host countries. In other words, "outside" law courts may not interfere with the sporting courts, therefore the police can not ban him as that would see the FA banned by FIFA from all international competitions, similar to recent cases in Portugal and Greece.

Eh? I know the FA is an independent body, it is not a "law" agency thou. The FA have rules, rules are not Laws.

Thatcher smacked someone unconcious, gets punished by the club and FA. He should also get punish by the court too.

Lets say i punch/stab/hurt someone at home, my dad docks my pocket money and then grounds me. Does that mean the police won't do anything?

There are no such a thing as Sporting Courts, they don't hold any water in law.

Thats not the case, he can and will be prosecuted for assault.

They law lets certain things go as they are as it were, "consenting adults" rash tackles, a bit of fisticuffs, but not GBH.

Reply wasn't aimed at you :) Was for Greenlizard0 above you ;)

FIFA states that the FA has to be independent of state influence, i.e. the law.

If its not the case, I best email them and get everyone kicked out of Europe, hows that :p

15 matches suspended for 2 years? I'm quite doubtful about that.....does it mean in 2008 he then misses another 15 games?

No, it means if he commits another offence within the next 2 years, then he will be banned for an additional 15 matches. However it isn't clear exactly what kind of offence would trigger the clause.

Cant Pompey, or Pedro Mendes, sue him in a civil court. So, what if he's on a ban, I bet he still gets his £20000 a week for training with the other players.

I would have docked him 8+15 weeks wages. about half a million. Now that would hurt....

if i recall correctly mendes said he wasnt going to take any action

That is true, and I commend him for it. I think it is important that the current rise in the litigation culture we are seeing in everyday life does not seep into sport, it would be disasterous.

I think fifa's rule is regards to game results and things like that, not assault and other charges.

Otherwise you could murder someone on the pitch and get away with it....

As SIAT posted above, 'independent of state influence' is very different from being independent of the law. The FIFA rules ensure that a reasonably level playing field is maintained, i.e. govt.s can't get involved in matches, etc., but they are not exempt from the law of the respective land.

The police probably looked at the Thatcher incident and were waiting to see what the FA's punishment would be: they obviously (at this point) deem it severe enough to not warrant any further action.

Of course, they are probably operating a 'strike' policy and will break Thatcher's posterior (or get Big Joe from H-block to do it) if he does anything like this again.

Now that's just guessing and would be silly, the policy is not the judge or jury and cannot deem any punishment by the FA to be "enough". Add to that non punishment by the FA should matter at all if they are going to prosecut or not. Their case should base purely on whether Thatcher broke the law, and that'll be that. Just because mummy gave him a slap doesn't mean that is all he should get.
