The chassis worked exactly as it was designed to do
In the old days, the chassis would have stayed more or less together, making the crash look less bad, but actually causing more damage to the driver.
Nowadays, the worse the crash looks (bits of car flying all over the place), typically, the better for the driver, as it's done what it should, and the car has absorbed the impact rather than the driver!
