The 10 biggest tech 'fails' of 2010

Ha-ha you have to laugh a the people who still deny the ipad is very much usefull tech.
and that tablets are the future. It was easy to see, even most scifi movies saw it coming. Bbut hey it must be fun to have irational hatered over a company and blind to the massive market and ways of ude.

As to fail surly kin should be number 1 never even heard of it.

I have a netbook and an ipad (and a laptop and desktop obviously)

The netbook has been turned on once in 6 months since I got the ipad. The ipad is on almost constantly at home, to the point where I'm going to buy a second one (will wait for the new version though)

How you can say its badwagon jumping is beyond me. They found a perfect niche that satisfies a lot of people. If someone brings out a device that does everything I want out of a portable device then how is it jumping on a bandwagon?

I'm a self confessed geek, but sometimes I just want to consume media, either the web, movies, news, games etc, and the ipad does that perfectly and wrapped in a lovely UI that even the mrs and kids can work out without me having to be their tech support.

If you don't want or need one then that's absolutely fine, but I just don't understand the hatred that they seem to generate in certain people. For me the ipad is the best single piece of tech I've bought in the last couple of years.

Ok so you have one iPad at home that you constantly use - so is it really that mobile which is the entire point of it. Also you want another device to do exactly the same job? I don't get why?

Tablets have been out for years - I find tablets much more useful due to the ability to actually connect to network devices so you can telnet into them and take notes in meetings by writing. I don't see that with iPads. Having an iPad pen tested last week at work and seeing them send a lot of data in clear text also posses a security risk.

I don't have an irrational hatred of the company the point I was making is that people seem to have an irrational love of the company even though the tech costs triple the price of competitors. You want to browse the web in full then a £200 laptop will do the job better - as the person above has said he uses it at home where theres always a charger to hand.

But so does a netbook? Just without the touch screen. You're forking out a chunk of money for something that a netbook will do better and will be cheaper to boot. As far as I know, apart from the touch screen etc., there isn't one thing you can do on the iPad that you can't on the netbook, but the reverse is very very true.

For something completely reliant on the internet, no webcam? I doubt i'm the only person who actually uses one to talk to people. And no USB ports? I know there's a lot of stuff online these days, but USB ports are pretty damn essential still. Not asking for a whole host of them, but at least 1?

I agree it does everything it says it does, but I just don't get the point in spending more on something that does less. Touchscreen isn't that worth it for me.

For me it's all about ergonomics, that is the main appeal of the iPad imo, All I want to do is surf the net, check my emails, play around with some cool apps from the app store and maybe watch a movie or two on the move, the iPad does this in a very very appealing form factor that I personally prefer over a net book any day, plus with better battery life and a standby time that lasts weeks it's much more practical as a mobile device, plus I prefer an interface that is specifically designed to be intuitive and easy to use, also the simple fact that the iPad can be used in portrait mode is another big bonus, it makes reading web pages much easier than 600pixels in length on a netbook, again, better ergonomics, people place to much emphasis on features but form factor is key here.

The iPads are a step in the right direct, overly priced but touch screen is now on it's way properly. With the launch of many Android tablets the market will pick up and a major stream of touch screen devices will come from under the table.

Expandable memory? I think 64gb is large enough for something that is not made to be your only computer

Fail of 2010 is posting on a tech forum and confusing memory with storage!

You sound like my Dad.

That's a very good point. The ability to keep turning the ipad around as and when needed from portrait to landscape and still remain usable is a big factor in why I like it.

I was sceptical when I first heard of the iPad, but I used one in a shop and it was certainly quite slick. My sister then bought her boyfriend one for Christmas this year, and I spent a good few hours on Christmas Day using it while everyone else was sleeping off the booze.

It's a handy gadget and quite a cool little tool, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it very 'useful'. If all you want to do it sit and browse the web and watch videos, etc, then I agree, it's nice. But it lacks a lot of the functionality of a proper laptop; I cant plug any USB devices into it. I cant take pictures. I cant play or burn a CD. I cant do a multitude of things a netbook or laptop can do.

This would all be fine, because that's not what it was designed to do. But when the choice is spend £400 on an iPad, or £250 on a proper laptop (as I did just after Christmas in the sales) which offers all of the above, it seems a no-brainer.

I dont have an irrational hatred of Apple. Nor even a hatred. Just a general annoyance about the way that people lap up their products and pay huge prices for technology which, while very slick and smart looking, isn't really all that functional. Regarding the iPhone 4, I had a friend who had an iPhone3, heard about the new version and immediately rushed out and upgraded in the first week that it came out. He had to pay £200 for the pleasure, even though already on a contract. And what did he get? A phone that looked slightly different, was a bit faster and had a nicer screen. Oh, and if you didn't hold it quite right, you couldn't call people. For two hundred pounds? Seriously? was it really worth that amount of money?

But hey, it didn't matter....look everyone, he's got an iPhone4!

That's a silly argument.
A) technology and the way we use it has changed a hell of a lot, just look at social networking that has sprung up in the last few years
B) they have not had a slick mobile UI.

Or maybe people have a use and want for the technology and atm no one else provides it.
It doesn't actually, look at the samsung Tab which is small screen and costs loads, same with Iphone, it costs the same amount Sim free as high end android.

!

It is and used in a different way to a laptop, just like many people have Desktop, laptop and mdia pc, this will add to that collection in the short term, and replace at least the laptop if not more in the future.
As for things like USB that has always been apples way and will not be the same for ChromeOS versions, when google finally releases it or windows 7 mobile.

As for price, you are paying for the tech in a much smaller item, does your notebook have touchscreen?

Iphone4 is a big upgrade to iphone3. I wasn't going to bother upgrading until I played with a friends. Much better imo. But thats something else..

Right now, more people have desktops or laptops that would still be retained (you would need to have 1), the main thing for people is that this is an addition to the hardware already in the house, rather than a replacement. People seem to forget that I think.

I rarely come across a website that i cannot view because of flash (on my iphone).
the flash argument is rubbish imo.

Yes the Flash argument is rubbish but we all know the only reason why Apple doesn’t support Flash is because loads of games on the App Store would not sell if you simply go to a Flash website and play them for free like Angry Birds. The minute they officially support Flash, the minute they start losing money on the App Store, so they try to justify that by going on about HTML5.

That's very true.
How much do apple take (as a percentage) from the apps that are sold?

I guess. In that case, I cant argue. It only makes it an even poorer financial decision to me. I certainly wouldn't buy an iPad as well as a perfectly usable laptop. But then I'm not the market Apple are targeting.
