The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Started Robotics Notes on saturday got up to ep 16 and safe to say some tears were shed :(

Anyone else know anime like this? Conspiracy/comedy etc. Im near the end now and I want more.

Personally I preferred Mandarake in Nakano Broadway and Shibuya to the one in Akihabara* (you'll probably need to look up where the Shibuya one is in advance as it can be a pain to find (from the street it's just a doorway with steps heading downwards)). Whilst in Shibuya there are several shop in shop official anime related stores on the 6th? floor of Parco 1. When I was last there there was some quite nice stuff in the Fuji TV shop there (I think that there is also a Fuji TV shop out at Odaiba but I haven't gotten out there yet). * but go to the Akihabara one anyway.

I did see some quite good deals on figures in Mandarake Grand Chaos but that's down in Osaka.

Other than that always hit a Book Off if you see one as they can have quite good deals on DVD/BD/CDs and whilst they are second hand everything I've got from there has been in pristine condition. What they have will vary enormously store by store though.

Other than that wander around in general and poke you head in everywhere (KBooks and Animate are favourites of mine). The UDX building in Akihabara has a couple of floors of restaurants (one of the floors has some reasonable public loos too which can be useful).

If you are spending any reasonable amount of time in Tokyo then I'd look at picking up a Suica card as it makes sing public transport even easier and you don't end up with a pocket full of change.

Roll on 6 months time when I'll be out there :)

edit: ANDARIAL, :D

Thanks for this, just looked up Parco 1 which might be worth a visit for the One Piece shop alone! And will certainly try and get to the Shibuya Mandarake and the Osaka branch depending on how their wares fair in Tokyo.

The Book Off recommendation sounds good too, I've not seen it mentioned before. I can't wait to find KBooks and Animate - I think this trip will be a severe test of my wife's patience! :p

Any recommendations for good cel stockists? I don't mind paying a decent amount for a good one or two, I'd just really like to find a cel from something like Evangelion, Welcome to the NHK or Gundam etc. I'm guessing there aren't cels for newer series nowadays with the move to digital?

We plan to pick up a Suica card; there's a deal that provides one with a return ticket on the N'ex, which we'll need as we start and finish the trip in Tokyo with trips out in the middle.

I absolutely cannot wait! I'm like a giddy child in the lead up to Christmas :D

Personally I haven't looked to closely for Cels but I would expect that they would be easier to find at Nakano Broadway than Akihabara itself. Nakano Broadway is the sort of place you just need to wander around everywhere and look at everything though.

If you like Gundam then i assume that you plan on going to the Gundam Cafe (next to the AKB48 Cafe and Shop between the station and the UDX building)?

A word of advice if you are using a Suica card and you are leaving Tokyo ... you can screw up your card if you are not careful. Think of this, hotel to Tokyo station on Suica card ... but you don't exit the station you use your rail pass to access the Shinkansen lines directly and leave Tokyo. Now your Suica card has a journey start but no journey end ... the system doesn't like that :( You get back to Tokyo and try to use it and it doesn't work. Fortunately bloke in booth at the end of the ticket gates can normally fix the problem if you look at him helplessly enough. At least that's what happened to me last time (I think ... I need to check with my Japanese teacher as I've pulled the records off my card using a phone app so I should be able to see exactly what happened now).

I would recommend (1) looking around the areas in advance on streetview just to get your bearings on where things are in relation to each other, (2) having a copy of the metro and rail maps in English is always handy (personally I tend to use the rail a lot more than the metro), (3) look up at buldings, the Japanese tend to have multiple stores in single buildings at times and it isn't always obvious from the ground floor, (4) sign up for free wifi at Starbucks Japan before going (you want an account setup prior to trying to use it) ... NTT also has free wifi for tourists ... there's a free app in the android app store called NAVITIME for Japan Travel which has info on this.

Well it looks like the soundtrack CD will be out on the 23rd (from the listing on CDJapan) for ~£15+shipping.

~10 days shipping for SAL for a CD from them normally and 5mins to rip and encode .. you should be able to get it by the beginning of next month.

Thanks memyselfandi; yep I plan on a trip to the Gundam Cafe, it'd be rude not to!

Good call on the Suica card issue; I've got a JR pass for the 7 middle days, but I could see myself using the card to get into the station anyway exactly as you describe! I'll avoid doing this and flash the JR pass instead through the manned gates.

Good call on the Streetview recommendation, I did this around Shinjuku and gave myself a much better understanding of the location. I've tried to do it around Akihabara station, but haven't quite worked out the layout yet. It's certianly taught me to look up though! A completely alien thing that it seems I need to do otherwise so many shops bars and restaurants will be missed! Good recommendation on the app too thanks, I've found a couple of others that have a good list of bars etc on maps so I can find plenty of good nomihodai ;)

Got round to watching Shinsekai Yori, and it was awesome. A fantastic scifi anime, from 2012, story and world building was well done. A slow start but man what an ending. Definitely recommend!

I loved this series, am still waiting on a group to release the final BD's to finish rewatching it again.

Really good story, nice art and good characters. Was one of my favourites when it aired.

I'll be keeping an eye out for the BD to hit these shores, not really a fan of importing them, and i'll have it in my collection.

Currently searching for Psycho Pass BD's in one package at a reasonable price!

I didn't know this, excellent!

I'm toying with the idea of using this series to introduce a friend of mine to some non-action-oriented anime.

Yes, should be airing this year. They are also going to reair the first season but with new edits this July to hype the next season. There is also a movie planned. I wouldn't be shocked to see a live-action movie coming later too.

Yeah, this would be a good Anime to show to someone because after all it's not all about moe moe fluffy characters. :p

argh, so they're going to re-author the blu-rays as well then?

Hopefully they'll put up some sort of contact form or announce details on how to exchange discs if they do (I've got the set here, just watched disc one the other night).

rumours flying about that the original Ghost in the Shell movie is getting a UK re-release without all the CGI rubbish!!

I'll update the thread when I have more info
