the best 24 inch monitor?

I recently purchased an ASUS VH242H for 170 bucks. I bought it on a massive sale but mainly since it was 23.6" and had won a buyers choice award from an egg related website (the buyers choice award only comes from buyers leaving exemplary reviews).

I have to say that I'm very happy with the screen and use it at work for over 8 hours a day.

Over priced, over hot and over rated. You can easily get a monitor as good (if not better) than a dell for much less cost. (don't even get me started on the 27" and 30" Dell ultra sharpes)
Try a HP or Samsung. BenQ are good value for low end budget but just don't expect too much from their monitors. Keep in mind the price. The midrange monitors for 24" give the best pound to performance ratio.

The anti-glare coatings are equally aggressive on monitors from a lot of manufacturers - it is certainly nothing unique to the Dell UltraSharp series (no surplus 'e' please it isn't somebody's surname ;)). Any broad gamut IPS monitors or indeed other monitors with powerful CCFL backlights do produce a lot of heat and use a lot of electricity - again not unique to the UltraSharps. The U2211H and U2311H are UltraSharp E-IPS screens that use less powerful backlights. They are actually surprisingly energy efficient and don't produce much heat at all. Considering the OP's budget and uses the Samsung B2430H is just perfect and he'd have a few pennies to spare, too.

Some people seem to be recommending avoiding benq, yet hundreds of glowing reviews for it around the net..is it just a case of not being entirely satisfied with the picture quality? What about the iiyama?

Aside from reading some good things about both monitors, LED appeals to be, having little room (depth wise) on my current desk.
I'm looking to game at 1080 and watch blu rays. Would led be fine for this?

ive also had a lot of negs on ilyama

the worst hting is we cant test drive these monitors!!

everyones eyes and peripheral visoin and the way it is simulated in the brain and fed back through the metacarpel of the quasiprotenic channel is different!!

(the above is bull terminology but i think you know what i mean lol people interpret things diff and its about what you like hence so many mixed reviews)
 
The BenQ at the current price is a good deal and is one of the better LED-backlit monitors for the price. If you have particularly limited desk space then that's a good reason to go for such a thin monitor - it will handle your movies and games just fine. I may have been a bit harsh about it but it's just that there are certain aspects of similarly priced Samsung monitors that I feel are a little better. Most people probably wouldn't notice these things and I'm just a picky bas**rd. Unfortunately I haven't used the Iiyama myself but similar CCFL backlit Iiyamas I have used have offered excellent image and build quality and they seem to do so fairly consistently. I have read some stuff about the Iiyama that suggests that the colours are a bit off and it sounds an awful lot like the Dell ST2320L I'm currently reviewing (I assure you that isn't a good thing).

Yeah they do! They look pretty good mounted like that actually. The little blue light at the bottom makes them look kind of like they are hovering there for some reason. A bit sci-fi ;).
 
No problem. I know it wasn't your intention but I'd advise removing the link to the South American River just to prevent any problems. Can just say the MDM05 and I'm sure it can be found :)

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think OCUK's stance on competitors has softened somewhat.

You must never, ever, link directly to any competitors site or product but i am under the impression that you can discuss/suggest products at companies whose core business isn't solely computer components
i.e Amazon, Play, ebay etc

I don't think linking directly to a competitor's website is allowed no matter what the circumstances. Said websites are very good at luring people into buying products other than what they were originally looking at. If I was OcUK I wouldn't like somebody luring away my potential customers like that and I think that's why they share that view. I just didn't want widerommer getting in trouble over something quite trivial.

Yes Samsung has some of the best and most useful presets for that kind of thing. They change the brightness, contrast, gamma and colour temperature slightly and don't introduce stupid excess sharpness or simply just alter the colour temperature like the presets of other manufacturers.
