What are yours? I'm going to allow a maximum of three, so its going to be tough.

For my ones I've gone back through my entire music collection and have selected the riffs which I think kick the most arse. Suprisingly, or not, I went back through many 'famous riff' bands such as Led Zepplin and AC-DC and certaintly couldn't find anything there that fitted the bill for me. Thinking about it, these are the riffs which make me want to pick up my guitar the most.

So here they are:

Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine. Mmm, no further explanation is needed really. It makes me want to don a top hat lean backwards and look godlike to thousands of adoring (preferebly female) fans.

Steve Vai - Bad Horsie. An absolute monster, I can't normally stand Steve Vai but this riff sounds like a ******* tank. Its just so immence that I often tune my guitar all the way down just to play it.

Joe Satriani - The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing. Again, admittedly a downright embarrising cheese fest, but the intro riff bit is just perfectly kick arse when in its full swing. Forget the silly widdly bit, the intro riff is the best bit of this song by miles.

I find it quite humerous that two of my favourite riffs are actually types of music I really wouldn't want to associate myself with at all :o

What are yours?

Muse - Hysteria
Hmm, the bass riff is much better than the guitar riff.... agree with Plug in Baby being great though. Will be suprised if Knights of Cydonia doesn't get a mention actually, the end riff is as fat as they come!

I think Muse generally come up with killer riffs when they feel like :p The bass riff to Sunburn is also great.

And I know you only said three, but I'm going to be cheeky and add Nine Black Alps - Ironside.

Money for Nothing - Dire Straits....

Crazy Train - Ozzy Osborne

and of course.....

Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin

=D

The Eagles - Life In The Fast Lane
Paul Gilbert - Down To Mexico
Racer X - Superheroes
Satch - Satch Boogie
Vai - Juice
Dream Theater - Beyond This Life (too many good riffs in here to name), Raising The Knife
John Petrucci - Damage Control
Pink Floyd - Money
Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes
Spock's Beard - When She's Gone (breakdown bit)
Yes - Siberian Khatru (Intro gtr part really).
Freefall - Blues demo ( :p )

I like your style

Personally, I'd have to settle for Pull Me Under or Afterlife but there's too many good DT riffs to decide from... :D

Quite a lot of Zeppelin's riffs were ripped off from older stuff.

Doesn't make it bad though. Easily some of the best musicians ever to grace this planet. :)

As for best riffs...

Decadence Dance - Extreme - 80's tinted music with awesome guitaring. This riff is easily one of the best. :D

Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream - Classic, a band of the best musicians (arguably) ever along with Pete Brown compose one of the best riffs ever written.

Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix - Need I say more?

The riff was stolen from 'You Need Love' by Willie Dixon. :)

Actually the riff is original (and the mother of all hard rock riffs), it was the lyrics which came from you need love.

Also, I'd include :-

Motorcycle Emptiness - Manic Street Preachers. Bradfield was only 19 when he wrote this riff, the one that made me buy a guitar

Sunshine of Your Love - Cream. Like Whole Lotta Love, proving that sometimes the simplest riffs are sometimes the most effective.

:)

The intro to Begging You - Stone Roses

Edit: and Hide the Dead Girl - Terrorvision for some reason I always think of it as an alternative theme song for Red Dwarf. I have no idea why  :o

Edit II: and Mansun - Take It Easy Chicken I loved it 10 years ago and it still makes the hairs stand up today.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama.

As for Zeppelin what about Custard Pie or Kashmir or gods know how many others? What about Smoke on the Water? What about early AC/DC? What about All Right Now by Free? Too many....

Killing Position by Symposium has one of the great heavy riffs... As does Apes Pigs and Spacemen's PVS. First of the great drop-D hammer-on riffs :)

The intro riff to James Dean-Esque by the Crocketts is fantastic as well.

Ignoring stuff already mentioned....

-Ocean Colour Scene - The Riverboat Song. I think I'm gonna put this on my mobile as the ringtone when I can arsed.
-Metallica - Fade to Black (outro)
-Oasis - Live Forever. Although ask me another day and I might choose a different track
-Blondie - atomic
-The Charlatans - One to Another.
-Coldplay - Yellow
-Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
-Fleetwood Mac - The Chain

Not overly happy with that list. I think this is something I will have to come back to as and when I hear all the ones I've forgotten.
