 Looking to change my trusty s939 setup (as per sig) to AM2, predominantly as I was toying with upgrading CPU anyway, along with the big jump to DDR2.

This has been made even more attractive with the cracking DDR2 deal :

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL) :)

So......looking for hints/tips/pointers/flag-wavings/fan-boy homages etc. for my motherboard choice.......am thinking this looks nice :

Not sure on the CPU yet.....prob a mid-range AM2 X2.....(suggestions welcome here too.....)...as will likely clock a notch or three

Asus CROSSHAIR nForce 590 SLi (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-166-AS) :)

...any thoughts ??

TBH, am very pleased with the Gigabyte I currently have, but not too sure that the AM2 offerings are all that......and the same for the MSI candidates......not really too much of an ABit guy......

But ! These are just my ramblings......looking for good pros/cons either way, along with reason-supported suggestions..... :D

Welllllllll, I agree that my current does not necessarily need updating per se, but I figure the 939 platform is going to slowly wither away, and the AM2 platform should see a few years, including the eventual arrival of 4/8/16/32/64/128/256 core CPUs (OK, I got a little carried away  there, scrap the 256 core :D )

Seriously, though, my understanding is that it is likely most AM2 'boards will support quad-core CPUs, BIOS update dependant....., and thus I thought could be a good time......plus, there is likely still a reasonable return on decent s939 kit.....which will dwindle more and more.....

Regards Conroe, I can't say that I am not tempted, but am a little worried by Intel's approach to socket changes/chipset confusion (975 or 975, that is the question !!!) and so on, plus AMD perhaps deserve a little loyalty for the last few years of goodness (not too caught up in that, but worth a mention).

All that said, perhaps I should consider Conroe......but am going to look at AM2 first......I think.....

I wouldn't put loyalties for particular brand as part of my check list for items I buy. I'd buy "Value for Money".

Conroe is value for money.

Even a simple E6300 can overclock to the speeds of a £600 cpu. Now that's value. Yes, the chipset is abit iffy but! nForce Mobos are out soon - perhaps a little more patience will pay off pocket wise?
I know there's always new tech come out from the near horizon but this mobo better live up the hype.

Now that's good logic......what 'boards are the models of choice currently for Conroe, then ?? I know very little about s775 boards.....
