The BMW Question?

I wonder how many people who now find themselves in a BMW once upon a time espoused the "BMW's are all rubbish, everyone has them, I'd never buy one, common as muck, not as good as everyone says, my mate had one it always broke down, I drove one and it was rubbish" mantra. This is a general point and not aimed at anyone in particular but I think it is quite an interesting topic of discussion if anyone is honest enough to admit to becoming one of the BMW Borg. As a longtime member of many motoring forums it is quite interesting to see how attitudes in many people change with circumstances.

Discuss!

I think BMW's are pukka.

I bet if people could afford 'em - They'd drive one.

I know that 330Ci's and M3's are common - But they still looks the NUTS and they probably drive even better.

...it's just the running costs that puts me off. BMW Servicing is mega expensive.

I bet 50% of people who slate them have never driven a decent BMW in their life.

My Mrs played merry hell when I said I wanted a BMW. I just ignored her and bought one, and now suddenly she wants a BMW.

Meh, they're OK. I like the M5 (both the last one and the "new" one) but I'm not fussed about the rest. Good quality cars though, as far as I'm aware and I certainly would never discount one on the old "BMW drivers are a bunch of *****" theory.

same here.
I don't think they are as tough/durable as some people make out but they are put together to a higher standard, use better materials/components and incorporate a higher level of engineering than almost all other mainstream manufacturers.

BMWs without a 'sharknose' jus don't see, to appeal to me :/

*n

This becuase they are what is known as 'good cars' and do not have rust or 80's design. Therefore you'd not understand :)

Besides I think we all established on this forum long ago that a 1983 Chevette is more fun to drive than a 330Ci Sport, according to JRS.

I agree with that :)

I wouldn't personally buy a BMW (at this stage in my life anyway, who knows what may happen later), but I can understand why others may want them.

I can afford one and I don't drive one.

I don't like them but I won't say they are rubbish, infact they are very good cars but I just don't see the appeal at all.

Same here.

Plus I'd never get one (or at least if I did I'd never post it on here) because everyone and their dog on this forum has got one :p

Bmw's are fantastic cars and i love most of the available range.

However i would only get one if there were not an equivalent Mercedes to go for. For me BMW doesnt quite have the same sense of occasion as driving a high end Mercedes Benz.

You said the main reason you got the Saab cheap is becuase it was what you could afford

At that time I was particuarly skint.

But now on the other hand, could have a 330ci if I wanted one.

But let me guess, you prefer driving your accident damaged Saab which you won't get the bumper repaired on? This doesn't make an awful lot of sense. If your spending power is such that you can afford a £10k car then why have you yet to spend the £200 that would stop your Saab looking like you just picked it up from a scrapyard?

Driving around in a car with mismatching panels becuase 'I can spray them cheap with a rattlecan if I wait to the summer' does not initially at least suggest your finances are such that £10k cars are affordable?

Or is this is a bit like the whole 'I am not director of IT sort of' saga? :p
