The cheapest vga card to play games at 1680 x 1050

Depends how cheap you want to go and what you consider "playable" to be....

Most people would seem to agree that the x1800xt or x1900gt at about £150 are great value for money - and both should play all recent games at that res, with high settings and give decent fps. For the same price you'd be looking at the 7900gs, which would give slightly lower performance, and I'm not sure that the reliability issues have been fixed in the 7900 range.....

Depending on your definition of "playable" then you could consider the 7600gt?! at about £90. But I would suspect that most people would consider the fps on most recent games to be too low at your res to consider this card.

Finally, I can't help myself - I'm going to have to mention the x1900xt 512Mb at £220!! Do your screen justice and go for this card!! The performance gains are worth the money if you can afford it!!

But if you're on a tight budget then the x1800xt or x1900gt would be my recomendations...

The X1900GT or X1800XT if in your budget are great cards (both faster than the 7900GS). The X1900XT 256MB or 512MB cards are well worth looking at too.

Other than that, if you want something cheaper, look at the 7600GT.

I have to say you won't be able to use a 7600GT in COD2 at 1024*768 it doesn't cut the mustard in terms of FPS with directX9.

I have one and it does ok for me at the above res I wouldn't consider it at your res.

The sapphire x1900xt 512Mb at £220 seems to be the one as its decently priced and performance should be good.

funny, i play it at 1152x864 with all details at max and 2xAA and its runs fine. only option which is set to medium is the dynamic lights and soften smoke is turned off.

My 128MB Geforce 6600GT plays COD2 rather well with directx 9 settings. If I remember correctly I left the other settings as they were (probably medium). Although maybe the E6600 and 2GB of Corsair DDR2-800 (4-4-4-12) help it along ever so slightly. :p

Aye there shouldn't be any problem at 1680 x 1050 with any modern game, providing details are lowered a little and AA/AF is minimal.
