The COD Cash Cow Lives On !

i have a lot of very knowledgeable lan mates on my facebook, i also have my little brother and his cronies too, i was pmsl reading an argument yesterday between a guy who knows what he s talking about , and my 16 yr old brothers little mate

a = 16 yr old
b = my mate Alan

a - omfg cod is amazing
b - yeah for a 4 yr old game its ok
a - how is it 4 yrs old you idiot, its just out
b - 4 yr old engine, animations, weapons etc
a - omfg you idiot its the best game eva and your wrong....

you get the picture lol, was a good toilet read but it does show that "proper" gamers dont appreciate reused games, IP etc and that Cod is really aimed now at the mass market "console" gamers.

If they brought one out monthly people would still buy it. For some people it's one of the only games they buy.

Someone made a good point recently. Something like COD is what, £40? You couldn't have a night out for £40 these days - how many hours entertainment are you going to get from a £40 game?

These companies will milk a winner until it dies and move on to the next thing - why not.

If people are buying then they must be doing something right!

Just read the BF3 thread, from what I read it is a bit of a letdown but that won't stop truckloads being sold either!

The big picture is that like it or not, the COD games are very good, some more than others, it has caused many to get into gaming, making it more popular which can only be a good thing. Developers having big cash titles will hopefully plough some of these profits into more games.

Win win!

Sad but true, also very true that games these days are in no way shape or form...challenging. You're spoon fed by them into feeling like you've achieved something.

My son is currently 16 months old, when he's old enough to play consoles he's starting off with a NES, moving up to a SNES, then i'm giving him the amiga when he's old enough, then i'll surprise him with an N64.

I may sound like a cheap parent (:p) but so long as i get him hooked on these before an age where he has school mates chatting xbox to him he'll appreciate the finer things about gaming. God i loved the days of moving side to side with my tongue hanging out trying to defeat the fortresses in super mario world.....:D

Theres more to it than lack of competition,

Developers are no longer given the breathing space to be inventive/try something new because the stakes are too high, studios are make/break based on the sales/success of their releases so they play it safe and stick by a formulae that they know works

A decade ago $100 million was about the going rate for film productions, these days you can expect around that figure being pumped into todays "triple A" game releases (swtor for example)

Stuff changes, movie industry went through a simular phase, eventually the people will vote with their feet, for the meanwhile just have to grin and bear it

The rise of the "indie" genre is where the real heart of gaming lies presently, one of the few sources of new/original ideas without the developers being under a ton of pressure to deliver

Actually its an 11 year old engine :D and the animations actually are different to previous ones (and improved), the AI is somewhat improved over the previous game too, but even more so than MW2 the Single Player feels more and more like "on a rail", its almost like rewinding/forwinding a movie so even tho its been ok so far I'm less interested than ever in the next COD game single player wise... whereas with COD1/2 and 4 that was one of the big draws.

Anyone hating on it for using an old engine tbh is a ******* idiot, show me any other decade old engine that looks this good :D I'd rather take the slightly dated in parts graphics in exchange for the fluid movement its far less clunky to play than most other games and its only in parts where it shows its age anyhow.

Tho I did have to laugh when I saw the warehouse from the pipeline MP map from COD4 reused in the African part of the SP campaign in MW3 :|

Not bought a CoD since 4 and I don't intend to until they mix it up a bit. MW2, Blops and MW3 are all more or less CoD4 with a few new maps, textures and some even more retarded perks than the last game.

As already said by many though, people will buy it. They could carry on doing it for another 4-5 games and millions would still go and buy it on release day.

They have to milk the cash-cow, afterall with 1 million WoW subs cancelled in the last year there's not gonna be enough money to pay Bobby Kotick his big fat bonus is there or the shareholders Xmas party in Bermuda.

People seem to complain about it just being the "same" game but hasn't console gaming always been like this? you can only push the hardware so far

Its funny how things like this seem to generate haters who think they are somehow "cooler" because they dont like what everyone else does and sneer at/talk down to them as well.

For 99% of the population, two people arguing about their favourite video games is the bona-fide definition of "uncool" :p

I've bought all the COD and BF games since the beginning and enjoy them both and i'll carry on buying the yearly updates but no way am I ever buying any more map packs etc.

If it isn't on the disk I'm not playing it!
