Well I learn something every day and today it was that you can get concave C2D's with a dip in the centre of the heatspreader.
I decided that 50°c on coretemp was a bit high for my thermalright 120 and with a second wind as it were took it apart to reset and reapply my arctic silver 5. Having done many heatsink seatings I set too with a nice thin layer across the cpu using a credit card and a rub off the heatsink to fill in the gaps.
Much to my dismay when I had reseated it I found my CPU at 58°c idle. Now I know I did not seat it incorrectly and did the usual opposite screws method of tightening down.
Took my heatsink off again and too my surprise noticed that it had not made contact with the majority of the CPU heatspreader but just around the edges
Now I don't have the courage to sand it down though I wish it had because it is pretty shockingly concave. I reapplied some arctic ceramique this time with a strip up the middle and have had much better results. Obviously it is not going to be as good as it could be but it's a start until I get a quad core.
So after all that lesson for the day for every out there wondering why their temperatures are just a bit high, just check your heatsink really is making full contact with your cpu!! it's not necessarily a bad seated heatsink.
Yes, yes Intel really do make concave CPU's!!!!!!!!!
