Who would you call in a matter like that to validate who they were? Crimestoppers?

Crimestoppers is a charity that can feed information (anonymously or otherwise) to the police, they wouldn't be able to tell you if a police officer is genuine or not.

In such a situation, ask to see an officers warrant card (even plain clothes CID types have them), there will also be a number assigned to each particular officer which is unique to them (and worn on their street uniform), call the non emergency 101 number for the force they are from and explain. The call handler should be able to check collar number and name, check whether or not the officer is booked on duty, and in some cases officers will create a log on the police systems for where they are going as well so it should be easy enough for them to check (this is partly an officer safety thing). A quick check on the address and they may see a log number created with officers assigned to the tasking.

No genuine officer will get annoyed at you verifying their credentials if they rock up on your doorstep, especially if in plain clothes (as many CID offficers or people assigned to proactive/high harm teams will be). Gets a bit amusing when they don't believe you're genuine cops when you roll up in a fully marked car with blue lights on, equipped with body worn video, taser, radios and full street uniform mind (yes, there are people that sceptical out there).

Just out of interest Housey, was your case an investigation led by Staffs or West Mids, or a joint effort?

I remember this from ages ago! Glad to hear it came to something and they got some time. Seems like the best defence against this sort of scheme is to live in the middle of nowhere :D
