The death of PS/2 ports?

It's comming increasingly familiar for manufacturers to release USB mice and keyboards. a lot of motherboards support this feature in BIOS.

So the question is, when will PS/2 ports be discontinued for two additional USB ports?
I know they saw the death of the Comms & Parrallel ports!

I guess so. I'm using a USB>PS/2 adapter on my mouse just so I can get another free USB port, and I'll welcome the day they finally get rid of them for another 2 or maybe even 4 USB ports. Ye can never have too many USB ports.

That said, I still am using a PS/2 keyboard...

There was an Abit mobo ages ago that I bought that was legacy free!
No Comms, Parallel or PS2 ports.

My diNovo wireless keyboard & mouse still has to be connected to a PS2 port as well as a USB port though?!!!

Doesn't give you the option to use either PS/2 or just USB on its own :\.

Pass!..............never tried lol!
I just seem to remember the quick start guide telling you to connect both.

Or is that a statement not a question?

Haven't used any legacy ports for years now, I think mobo manufacturers will start to include them as a plug in port, like extra usb ports/firewire are now.

i have a mobo with no ps2 or comms etc

all its got is usb, firewire, audio jacks (including optical in/out) and dual LAN

Well a lot of the PC manufacturers still send out PS/2 keyboards or mice with their computers. My dell 2 and a half years ago came with both mouse and keyboard PS/2 and from what I can see they're still doing that today. Atleast Packard Bell are, my gfs family got a PB and it came with a PS/2 keyboard and an abysmal PS/2 mouse. Got them an optical usb mouse from work :)

They tried to originally scrap the "legacy" ports in 2000. So it's about time that they are finally building PCs without them. ;) When was the last time you plugged something into one of them serial ports?

WRT the keyboard / mouse combos where there is both a PS2 and USB connector. Normally the PS2 connector is only there for legacy systems, and then only needed for access to the BIOS. Try unplugging that PS2 lead and then don't be surprised when it works fine for you. (All the Logitech based kit I am using works fine without the PS2 leads - BIOS included)

And those of you short of USB ports - why don't you just buy a USB hub and dump it on your desk? Makes life so much easier to plug mice, joysticks and USB drives into a desk based hub. :p

I think every keyboard/mouse I have had lately which is USB has always came with a usb->ps/2 adapter with it. Pretty handy.

I can live without serial and parallel ports. I still have a couple of serial devices but they work happily with serial-to-USB adapters. I use a 4-port PS/2 KVM so would need PS/2-to-USB adapters if I bought a mobo without PS/2 ports. Not too much of a problem, I hope, but an added expense.

Dell have scrapped legacy ports. Some of the highend systems support legacy ports, but mostly it's usb only.

ps2 mice and ps2 board here :) and i for one am happy to keep it that way. even thogh everything else in my system is brand new. mayaswell keep and just stick more usb ports in. dont have to get rid of em to have more usb ports.

It only needs the USB one. Logitech desktop sets come with PS/2 or USB options, but you don't need to use both at the same time.
