For it, but only the most extreme cases of murder or attempted murder. And you have to be 100% sure they did it.

I would say a unanimous verdict but you would get some jurors saying not guilty just because they are against execution.

For it in theory. I don't particularly see a great reason to keep serial killers alive in prison, especially those which were caught bang to rights and are never going to get released. Even if it seems less than humane, we might as well off those who'll never be forgiven.

Against it in practice. I don't particularly trust any legal system in the world nor do I have immense faith in the jury system. A single wrongful death, which is inevitable, would instantly wipe out any good* it could do. I'd never trust anyone which the power to make such decisions.

* The good would be pretty shallow too, and could probably be argued down fairly effectively.

Against..

But if it's used as a deterrent For murder and works! Can't think of anything else that would make a person think twice before committing..

Nope none of the above, its just what i think.

That's what Anders Breivik said.

But if it's used as a deterrent For murder and works! Can't think of anything else that would make a person think twice before committing..

But it doesn't. That's why we had murderers and rapists, etc with the death penalty and why countries that do have it, still have murderers and rapists.

Why not? Those who are affected by the actions of the criminal merit a say.

I think it is a fair point to want to balance the victim's needs and frankly in our justice system we often skew that away in the wrong direction.

But what people want short term may not be what is best for them and not what is best for society as a whole. So the balance has to be found by people who are not as closely involved..chances are some people would be mortified at having to live with the results of 'revenge' long term, knowing they had done what the perpetrator had done.

Justice and revenge have to be separated or you don't have justice.

They should put an ad out for public executioners and section everyone who applies. There is something fundamentally wrong with a person who salivates over thoughts of torturing or killing a defenceless human being.

Its a job, very few people salivate over what they do for a living. I think most executioners of old saw it as a necesary evil.

I know there have been threads on this before, but not for a good while (and we have different members around now and so on).

As this was just brought up in another thread, I'd thought I'd ask. We could have a poll if the mods think it's a good idea, up to them.

Are you for or against the death penalty?

Generally, I'm against it. However, I think in some cases where guilt is completely beyond doubt, and the person has zero chance of rehabilitation, it could be a viable option. Anders Behring Breivik being a prime example, he's going to cost money to keep alive with absolutely zero benefit.

where is the poll man?

and yes I want the death penalty especially after thugs broke into my house with an armed weapon a week ago. The one who we detained and beat up whilst the police came deserves to be given lethal injection as punishment instead of the light prison sentences handed out in Britain.

BRING BACK CAPITAL PUNISHMENT!!!

Thinking about it, if someone is a murder they must have a mental problem that they can't help.

So if found guilty nobody thats apart of a justice system has the hand of god to kill someone for been sick, if you get me.

That's precisely what I am saying, yes.

I would agree with you.....however, if it were my Son and Wife that was murdered, nothing on this earth would stop me from killing the person responsible.....and damn the consequences and morality of it.

Although, that is vengeance, I would have no interest in justice.

Not all murderers are mentally ill. Some just genuinly don't believe what they did is wrong, or don't care.

I'm all for it, execute all the murderers in prison, rapists, pedophiles, free up more space for petty crimes and longer sentences for asbo's.

Will never happen anyway, otherwise setup some trade agreement with places like Thailand and send our prisoners there, would save a huge fortune having murderers in the living hell prisons there instead of the holiday camps here.

For, but only in the case of irrefutable evidence of murder. If you grant yourself the power to take life, then you forfeit your own.

I disagree with the death penalty for smaller crimes, such as in the other thread. There is always need for manpower somewhere in the world. Put them to use.

I don't think there are many people who'd be disagreeing with the sentiment in principle, but as you say its revenge / vengeance and society, in my view, needs to step away from that.

Aside for the lawfulness of it, execution is murder. You're granting the fallible state the right to choose who lives and dies, and to take lives.

As for irrefutable evidence, there are numerous cases where they believed they had "irrefutable evidence" which turned out to be false, incorrect or misinterpreted. How many innocent people died as a result?

To support the death penalty you have to be okay with killing innocents.
