the East Lancs Road

Is this some sort of a joke?

It's a Motorway, you join it, drive in a straight line (or at worst a slight corner) at 70mph, then leave again.

If you cant handle that please hand your license in and pop to http://www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Give the guy a break Fox. Can you not see why someone who's driving on their own for the first time might be apprehensive of the motorway? It's entirely plausible he's never been on a motorway beforer.

:)

I remember my first time on my own on a motorway, I was nervous at the start when joining, but after about a mile I realised it's easy, easier than town driving for sure!

Bite the bullet, go for a spin, get some time on the motorways :)

To be honest, you're in Manchester, you've one of the easiest places to practice motorway driving, just come onto the M60 and come off and the next junction. If you didn't die rinse and repeat until you're comfortable

I find this funny.

I dont think I actually even gave joining a motorway a second thought on my first day on my own. I actually specifically had a long journey planned for that day. Was brilliant :D

Geat feeling the first time driving off to somewhere with a purpose for the first time :)

Get on the motorway on day1, then it won't become some sort of phobia..

Oooh I live just off the East Lancs.

Just a long ass road from the centre of Manchester to Liverpool.

...and as mentioned far too many lights, which I firmly believe attribute to the amount of accidents on it, as silly as that sounds.

Driven up and down the A580 hundreds of times up until the mid 70's (Used to live in Newton-Le-Willows). I suppose it has changed a lot but unless they have restricted it down to 60 MPH then surely it is the same as a Motorway regarding speed limits, 70 MPH unless otherwise stated?

I'm not sure if theres any NSL bits left. All the bit in salford is 50mph now, and I think Wigan are planning to roll out the same, they've already dropped it to 60. Think the Merseyside end is all 60 or less too.

Not sure where the speed bumps and traffic calming measures are though?

This thread has taken me back a few years andi. M6 Motorway ( Newton-Le-Willows) was the first section of any M/way built in this country. I think I was about 10 or 11 years of age at the time and used to ride up/down the new building work on the back of a dumper with orders of Tea/Coffee canteens, (similar to a flask but didn't keep the heat in for long) :D and various sandwiches picked up from the local truck stop.

All done after school hours, weekends and holidays. If my memory doesn't fail me I used to make about £4 to £5 per week, most adults were on a wage of £10 to £12 a week at the time except for those building the M/way who were earning in the region of £30 to £40 per week bonus. + :D

Which way are you going? From manc to Liverpool or the other way?

Judginy by your location you're going From Manchester to Liverpool :p In which case in the morning the M62 is fine, a bit of build up where the M60 joins but otherwise fine (can't speak for when you get to Liverpool). Coming home it's pretty busy and you'll crawl all the way from the M6 junction up until the M62 junction (12miles ish, used to take about 15mins I think) after that it's clear all up until Regent Road in the city. Either way it's MUCH better than using the East Lancs.

God I'm glad I don't commute on it now though :p Lovely 2.5mile commute now.

Yesh going from Manchester to Liverpool. For a night out hopefully. I've travelled the route a million times before, but always as a passenger. I just thought the East Lancs might be an OK supplement, Seems the general view is that the motorway is better!

so what time do people think will be least busy. Wed M-L, Thurs L-M ?

Anyday but friday, And you don't want to be on there between 4 - 6:30 (Rush hour)

Passed my test 4 months ago now, was quite apprehensive about the motorway myself, but once you've driven a mile or two, you'll see that its the same as normal driving ^^

Sensible suggestion here

if you really are that apprehensive about motorway driving. Invest in taking pass plus.

You can't spend your entire driving life avoiding motorways. If you're nervous, fine. But do something about it.

I'm not really apprehensive about the motorway, I really only started this Thread to see if the East Lancs was a suitable alternative, and that's only because it will be my first day of solo driving...
I'll most likely just go for it!
