"December sales surge fails to redress the balance
UK and European specialist retailer GAME has announced its financial results for the full year ended January 31st, revealing a massive drop in profits, despite a positive boost in turnover towards the end of 2005.

Citing the now somewhat over-used rationale of a "difficult transitional period," the company revealed pre-tax profits of just GBP 8.4 million, compared to GBP 29 million a year ago.

The company did end the year on a more positive note, showing an increase in turnover from GBP 5.76 million to GBP 645.1 million, helped largely by the introduction of Microsofts 360 and strong sales of both the PSP and Nintendo DS.

Game blames the loss in profits on "cyclical deflation in software selling prices, pricing pressure on older formats and the increased proportion of hardware in the sales mix."

GAME Group chairman, Peter Lewis, commented: "This was an immensely difficult transitional year and it is disappointing to report such a sharp drop in profits. Our comparatively strong sales performance is testimony to our ability to address competitive threats to our specialist business model."

"We expect the UK market to continue to be very competitive during 2006, particularly on older formats," Lewis added. "However, our proposition to consumers comprises a unique package of wide product range, pre-order facilities, pre-owned trade-in programme, special promotions and a reward card that now has more than seven million members."

The group operates 700 stores in six countries and is expected to open between 70 and 80 owned stores in 2006/2007, of which around 60 will be in Continental Europe"

Hmm maybe its got something to do with the fact they sell xbox 360 games for £50.00 over their rivals tesco at £40.00?? I really dont like game but people buy software from them just because of the 10 day guarantee. ;)

That will teach the batties to force all the decent, independant games shops out of business and devouring all the other high street games retailers. muhahaha

It's nothing to do with what other retailers charge on the highstreet, it's to do with online shopping.

It's just as cheap to online shop, you get it next day and it comes to your door. Whilst tax does have a large issue, as do new consoles and older consoles becoming obsolete (resulting in price drops for hardware and software) it's an issue that is affecting all high-street stores.

Really? Because I, and most of my friends, hardly ever shop online, and yet we are quite happy to drive down to tesco's and pick up a game ten pounds cheaper than at GAME.

For many people the delivery of Online purchases is still a big issue. I've lost count of the amount of times i've missed a package due to being at work. It's much easier for most to just buy software/hardware in person.

 But if you only buy one game (sometimes two), most retailers send it in packaging that easily fits through your letterbox.

Well i and lots of my friends dont really buy games off the net but from local shops, why would i buy online for £40 when tesco do them at the same price

i agree, i used to get all my games online until the mighty buying power of tesco came to the scene.

why bother waiting for mr postman pat when you can get you grubby little mits on it straight away , and all at the same price :D

I get games for that price, delivered through my letterbox (Free delivery) a day or two before release. I don't even need to leave my house! :)

Your arguments for buying from Tesco are flawed.

I used to like Game but over the last 5 years they have become the new JB Sport. City center full of their shops all selling the same limited range of stock, how dull the both of them are.

mmm they have a pretty decent selection tbh, was in a store today on my dinner and although they didnt have the game i wanted they have done previously, u just have to spot the deals as and when they have em.. like ResI4 on the ps2 for £19.99 a couple of months ago (when was 30+ everywhere else etc)

We have 3 in our town center why fs! no need for 3 seperate shops!

I no longer go in there its a complete rip off  And i dont buy online either i go to good old tescos for my games £40 there and then cant complain at all :) If game was to lower prices then maybe id go back in there whilst i was already in town but at the minute no need too.

How can tesco sell games for £40 and game cant? As they refused someone on here the price check because they dont make enough profit. Surely being as "huge" as game is they can afford to sell games at a better price. I mean £50 come on!

Tesco can offset prices & have loss leaders - bringing people into their stores to buy games & then possibly getting their food shop there as well. Shops like GAME rely on their software sales for profits though.

Two completely different stories really.

i doubt even tesco can stand to loose £10 per game sold tho!

Where i live (channel islands)every shop sells xbox 360 games at £39.99 without vat..including tiny little one off shops..
So am guessing the normal retail price for an xbox360 game including VAT in the mainland should be £45 to £47.
