The same sob story was mooted when Romania and Bulgaria joined. The populations of these countries didn't suddenly turn up in the UK, what's different about Turkey?

I remember when Nigel Farage was ridiculed for saying 10's of thousands would come, turned out he was more than right

And this is the result...well done

Honestly i just put my head in my hands when i read this story, i just couldn't believe what i was reading, so the renegotiations have resulted in the removal of tax credits to the very poorest in the UK, and this is the EU you want to be a part of? No thanks, time to leave before the EU tears itself apart and takes us with it.

I've read that article and desperately hope that it's not true, but fear it is. If it turns out to be true it's an astounding betrayal of the British people.

The thing is, we're able to take tax benefits away from low paid workers without having to get approval from the EU, which means effectively that Britain has gone cap in hand to Brussels and got precisely sod all. This happens time and time again and I'm sick of the disrespectful way the EU treats this country

If you care to check how many of these are now here you will find that you're talking rubbish.

Taking Scorzas figure of 200,000 that would be 0.0068% of the eligible population...so Platypus hardly seems to be talking rubbish

No, he was ridiculed for bandying around the number of 29million eligible and that 'up to half' could come here wasn't it?

And this is the result...well done

EU deal would mean hundreds of thousands British workers would miss out on tax-credits

Has Cameron just handed the Out campaign a win all wrapped up with a bow on top?

God you two love to wallow along in your own hyperbole

How is this an attack on the UK, one of the fundamental principles of the EU is that all citizens should be treated the same, that is all they are stating.

Now before you both go foaming at the mouth, I agree, if true it's a stupid solution to the proposal from Cameron, but it's not done from the angle of 'sticking it to the UK'

Reducing income inequality in the UK is more important to me than preserving the free movement of people in the EU. It's that simple.

Disgusting if true. This should be posted over on mumsnet uk.

I know and you are entitled to that perfectly fair opinion. Just don't ascribe malicous intent to others motivations when it's not justified.

Shall we wait to find out if it's true first before getting all outraged?

Come on you know the deal by now. Post a credible source and we can discuss it.

I remember when Nigel Farage was ridiculed for saying 10's of thousands would come, turned out he was more than right
You mean Farage said millions would come, and 22,000 did at the time?

172,000 as of 2014 immigration figures. Quite a far cry from 75 million turks, or the 29 million Farage waffled on about.

So, who's talking rubbish? Thats right. You and the chap scaremongering about 75 million turks suddenly turning up.

Fact Check time: Farage said that 29 million Bulgarians and Romanians would have the right to live and work in the UK. He's correct, this is undeniable - it is a fundamental principle of the EU. At no point did he predict that 29 million would come - that's just spin by the established media to deflect from how many are here already and the effect that is having on society.

Farage is a very clever man, and his own spin is easily on the same level as the "media establishment" you're so against (which is ironic as thats how Farage has managed to succeed). He played the statistics very well, fear-mongering with a massive headline number that is never ever going to happen. Which, if you hadn't spotted it, was sort of my point. 75 million Turks will not come to the UK. So why even mention it? Simply because it's a huge number and its used to scare people.

Talking of spin, lets look at what the UKIP flyers were saying

Within a year, 29 million Romanians and Bulgarians will gain the right to live, work and draw benefits here.

Only UKIP is taking seriously this massive threat to our local housing, schools, health and council services. All the other parties say they can do nothing about it

Thats why you need UKIP in County Hall

I don't see any mention that the expected numbers are actually going to be in the 10's of thousands.

They know exactly what they are doing when they bandy the 29 million figure in the headline with no further details

"Will gain the right" - proves what I was saying. I wonder if the regressive left are simply being arrogant in assuming that British people won't understand what's being said, or so stupid that they don't understand the meaning behind these words themselves.

I imagine they wanted to stick to the facts and avoid making predictions because a) if they'd got it right and said an extra 100,000 migrants a year would come here they'd be accused of scare mongering, and b) if they'd got it wrong they'd be constantly reminded of it, as that oh-so-clever liberal academic who said just 13,000 Polish people would come to the UK once 38 million Poles gained the right to live and work in the UK has found out.

I know you have a massive blind faith for Farage, but if another politician had said something similar, you'd have been all over it like a rash for fearmongering; if it didn't suit your point of view. You really are the worst kind of hypocrite.

It's using a psychologically intimidating number to whip people into a frenzy, get them scared, and get them frothing at the mouth. Works, doesn't it?

I think most posts on GD every day show how people take the headline and run with it rather than delve deeper into the story for all the facts and critically analyse the intent of the message against the reality of the situation.

It's a done deal. But you know PC people will come out with other utter trash to make them feel happy.

Cameron is a Muppet. Can't wait to get out of the EU.

+1

Anyone watch question time last night my god some of the morons in that audience voting to remain was embarrassing.

One even said leaving the EU would stop all tourism.

Oh wow I haven't watched it yet, can't wait for the blood pressure. I don't know why they bother with an audience, rarely do they present anything more than a paper thin headline skimming opinion.

It's the first line of your quote - it's literally in the headline.
