I'm no scientist, but could one nuclear reactor seriously produce enough radition to wipe out the entire planet, even in the worst case scenario?

If this was true then surely every major government would be working together to stop it from happening.
 
Theres so much rubbish in that article... not to say there isn't a potential catastrophe there but the chance of both an earthquake or similiar catastrophe hitting the plant and one that would both break containment and send a huge amount of radioative material skywards and into the wider environment is pretty slim.

Still a good chance of high levels of localised leakage tho which could have a devastating effect on the immediate surrounding area and ground water downstream.

Yes potentially... tho the safeguards in place these days should stop it happening even in a worst case scenario, a major run away meltdown along with the wrong weather conditions could potentially spread enough material over a large proportion of the earths surface to produce major problems worldwide... very very very unlikely tho.

Considering even the author of the article admits no one can be sure of the situation I'll hold off building the nuclear unclear and stitching up on rations.... Or will I?

I think you haven't read enough about the topic in depth, and assume all in that article to be fact as you read it on the internet.
I think the world will not end.

And the Chernobyl catastrophe made its surrounding regions uninhabitable by humans for centuries.

Is it wrong that when I realised how unreliable and moronic that article was, I actually felt a little dissapointed? I want to play Fallout: London in real life.
 
Seriously, I'm getting sick of all this bloody nuclear scaremongering by absolute idiots who have no clue what they are talking about. Fun fact: in normal operating conditions, a coal power plant release more radioactivity than a nuclear power plant (not harmful btw).

Nuclear technology has stalled in the last 30-40 years; we could easily be on advanced breeder reactors, or fast neutron reactors that could produce less waste for example. Britain used to be a big player in development of nuclear power (e.g. AGR design) but the 'next gen' of nuclear in this country is probably going to be American.

So according the article if there is even a minor earthquake then reactor 4 will collapse and kill everyone ..... :rolleyes: ..... so whoever wrote the article doesn't realise how many earthquakes the area has had since the problem started ....

Put it this way, I'm going to Japan in October and I can't say I'm worried about it.
