** THE FIRST FREESYNC MONITOR ARRIVES AT OcUK!! **

It's crap, I did say G-Sync is expensive. But it's justified for lack of better phrasing because of the extra hardware in the monitors. Adaptive Sync is an updated DisplayPort, a port type that is already common on monitors. No one has had to pay for this, DisplayPort is royalty free, so a £180 price rise is unjustified.

If that little box is not what makes G-Sync so expensive then tell me what does make it so expensive...

Isn't it actually a £100 price drop over the equivalent G-Sync monitor?

As to what it is that makes the G-Sync monitors so expensive.. You can only look to Nvidia. There's absolutely no way the g-sync module costs £100 to manufacture.

Atleast with the Swift your paying around £100 for the ROG branding (compare other ROG stuff to equivalent specs from other brands) not sure how it stacks up for other monitors using GSync.

The FPFA used for GSync costs something like $14-34 depending on bulk and specs, but companies like nVidia can get it for around $9 in large quantities I believe. That isn't the entire cost of GSync however.

The closest BenQ match to this BenQ freesync monitor I can find on OcUK is £320. It's not 144hz but it is IPS, and doesn't have Freesync ofc. So a £180 difference in price and the difference is Freesync and 144hz. More like Premiumsync imo.

G-Sync at least has extra hardware and you can run it off any port, that's what you're paying for. So what about this £180 bump up in price for Freesync, what's that paying for? I thought the point of Freesync is that monitors were already capable of it in theory since the 90's, just no one bothered until a counter was needed for G-Sync, and to make it happen all that's needed is an updated display port? what is now DisplayPort 1.2a?. HDMI doesn't add £180 to a monitors value when it gets a revision.

Yes G-Sync is expensive, but Freesync looks like robbery despite being the cheaper option of the 2. I'm gutted for AMD users.

Would love to know where you get £180 for freesync????

Definately not a premium and the above proves it.

The Freesync version is 1440p and 3" bigger. And yeah maybe a little premium atm due to being first to market. but freesync will never carry the same "premiums" as a nvidia counterpart.

The extra hardware costs next to nothing in a G-Sync monitor.

You're paying a premium for having a 144Hz 2560x1440 panel. That's it, not because of "Freesync".

If that little box is not what makes G-Sync so expensive then tell me what does make it so expensive. I'm pretty sure it's that little box though. And no, it's not a rip off because it uses DP, it's a rip off because we are being asked to fork over £180 for free technology which has incurred no extra cost upon monitor manufacturers to implement.

Nope, we're being asked for over £180 because it's one of 2 monitors on the market that comes with a 2560x1440 144hz display, and as such manufacturers are putting a premium price on it because if you want a display with those specs, then you have very little choice.

Once they become more common, the price will drop.

You also can't run G-Sync off any port. It has to be DP as well.

Of course just like the premium IPS had years ago when only a few premium models used it, now IPS monitors can be had sub £100. :)

After many years of being an early adopter I treat hardware purchases the same as games now. Don't buy immediately and pay the manufacturers and probably more likely the retailers premium for a new product just because.

They'll get the message in the end.

Although £500 is a lot for a monitor regardless of its specs

this one seems extremely well priced compared to other monitors of similar spec.

Not to mention retailer premiums. :D

It certainly helps that Benq owns the only company making these 27" 2560x1440 144Hz panels.

Of course, but being realistic any premium we add is typically 2-5%, because once shortage ends we will struggle to make more than double digit margins, so if we can scrape into double digit margin percentage happy days. :)

You DO realise even 1920 res 120/144Hz TN monitor has a huge price premium over 1920 res 60Hz TN/IPS monitor right?

Yes whilst I do agree at that price we "should" get IPS panel as well as the 120/144Hz, but it cannot be helped if manufacturers want to milk it with a higher price tag, due to lack of competition for the 2560 res 120/144Hz segment of the monitor market...

Hi there

Your all wanting an IPS, but if you were given an IPS for some of you the response would not be fast enough as only TN can do sub 1ms realistically and TN does not suffer IPS glow.

There is no perfect panel type on the market:
TN: Response and high refresh
IPS: Great viewing angles, colours.
VA: Good viewing angles and improved blacks.

But there is no panel which includes the positives of all three without any of the negatives each type has.

You'll notice the shortfalls of TN well before you notice IPS glow though!

That said, there are high refresh IPS panels coming which should change things a lot.

This monitor does look nice and fits together quickly and easily and comes with just about all the cables you could need.

the stand comes in two parts base and stand and fits together quickly and easily. The monitor then attaches on quickly and securely as well.
